NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Anthony Davis was busier than any of the other players in the Final Four.

The Kentucky freshman had to make the circuit of Player of the Year presentations Friday, not that he was complaining.

"There were a lot of awards yesterday and today," Davis said with a big smile. "It's a great feeling, especially as a freshman. I've been working hard and now it's rewarding."

Davis became the first Kentucky player and second freshman to be selected The Associated Press' Player of the Year. He picked up his latest trophy, along with Coach of the Year Frank Haith of Missouri.

It was Davis' second ceremony of the day, and he had to make a quick exit to get to practice, part of the preparations for the national semifinal matchup against Louisville on Saturday.

"This is great to be here and hopefully we can win the national championship and accomplish our goal," he said. "Even if we come up short we still had a great season."

The 6-foot-10 Davis sure did.

He averaged 14.3 points ? on a team with six double-figure scorers ? 10.0 rebounds and 4.6 blocks while shooting 64.2 percent from the field. His block total is a school record and third-best ever for a freshman. He was the Southeastern Conference's Player, Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year.

"My expectations were nothing like this; I wasn't planning on any awards," he said of how he approached his first ? and what many project will be his only ? season in college basketball. "I have to thank my teammates for those lob passes for easy baskets and for them getting beat off the dribble for all those blocked shots. Without them there are no awards."

No Kentucky player had won the award which started in 1961, and the only other freshman to win it was Kevin Durant of Texas in 2007.

"I'm surprised because you've had a lot of great players from Kentucky," Davis said. "Hopefully I'm starting something, and a lot of Kentucky players will win this award."

Davis received 43 votes from the 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Balloting was done before the NCAA tournament.

Thomas Robinson of Kansas was second with 20 votes, and Draymond Green of Michigan State received the other two votes.

Jimmer Fredette of BYU won the award last season.

Haith's first season at Missouri got off to a rough start and ended with a second-round thud in the NCAA tournament. In between his unpopular selection to replace Mike Anderson at Missouri and the Tigers' stunning loss to 15th-seeded Norfolk State, things went very well.

Missouri won 30 games and the Big 12 tournament and was ranked in the AP poll the entire season, reaching second for one week and was third in the final poll.

Haith received 21 votes from the media panel, while John Calipari of Kentucky and Tom Izzo of Michigan State tied for second with 10 votes each. The voting was done before the NCAA tournament.

Unlike Davis, Haith didn't have a practice to rush to Friday.

"It's good to see your peers at something like the Final Four, but the disappointment of your season being over is still there," Haith said. "Still, I can't tell you how honored and humbled I am with all the recognition."

Haith left Miami after seven seasons to take over the program at Missouri.

"My landing in Columbia wasn't greeted with a lot of yeas and congratulations, but I wasn't disappointed, rather encouraged because that showed me passion. And I wanted that, because that kind of passion means you have a chance to be successful," he said.

Haith's coaching style was very different from Anderson's uptempo pressure way and that meant change, something a lot of college players don't take to easily.

"Mike Anderson left me some pretty good players," Haith said. "They bought into change, and that's not always easy when you have a system in place they want. I give the players a lot of credit for buying in. When the players buy in you have a chance to be successful."

Haith, who joined Norm Stewart in 1994 as the only Missouri coaches to win the award, said it was early in the season when he knew the players had bought in.

"We were in Kansas City for the CBE Classic, and we beat Cal and Notre Dame," Haith said. "We changed things, and I think you have to have success to make change. We saw success, and those guys started to buy in. And it was all because of the leadership on the team."

Haith was hired at Missouri with the knowledge the program he was leaving was under NCAA investigation for possible rules violations.

"I think we, the Mizzou Nation and my family, all will be happy when it's all over with, but we can't control the NCAA and the time frame in which they work," he said.

He was asked if he was confident the investigation would come up empty.

"Absolutely," he said.

Judith J. Wurtman, PhD: If Your Spouse Snores, Will You Gain Weight?

I bumped into a friend at a neighborhood coffee shop a few mornings ago. Normally she drinks a skim milk latte, but this morning her coffee was laced with chocolate and topped with a cushion of whipped cream. As we sat down to drink our coffee, she bit into a giant piece of coffee cake.

"I can't stop eating," she said between mouthfuls. "And I know it's because I haven't slept in three nights. Tom [her husband] has a cold and snores all night like an erupting volcano. Our house guest is in the spare bedroom, so there is nowhere I can go to get away from the noise. My willpower is shot. I think I gained five pounds in the last three days."

Although snoring spouses have not made it onto the list of common causes of weight gain, sleeplessness, whether caused by a noisy bed partner, 3 a.m. anxiety, jet lag, or shift work may have a disastrous effect on eating. Anyone who has endured even a few nights of restricted sleep knows this. The overwhelming fatigue and fuzzy-headedness that accompanies too few hours of sleep can induce a feeling of helplessness when confronted with tempting foods. The willpower, the motivation to stay on a diet, and the guilt at not staying on track can all disappear.

"I can't help myself," my client, who was a new associate in a large law firm, complained. "Sometimes I get only three or four hours sleep because of my workload, and I keep stuffing food in my mouth. I could not even tell you what I eat, except that it is probably chocolate, cookies and potato chips."

Many research studies have placed a scientific foundation beneath the countless anecdotes about sleep deprivation and overeating, especially among people suffering from chronic sleep deprivation, such as shift workers. Now there is new evidence on how the brain may be involved in the overeating following lack of sleep. According to a paper published in the April issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by St-Onge, McReynolds, Trivedi, et. al, brain activity in the areas associated with reward and pleasure changed after sleep deprivation.

In this study, volunteers spent six days sleeping their normal nine hours a night, and six days sleeping only four hours a night. After each phase of the study, the researchers presented the volunteers with pictures of tempting foods and then measured brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The reward and pleasure areas of brains became active following the period of sleep restriction, but not when the volunteers slept normally.

These results may explain why my friend consumed 500+ calories of whipped-cream topped coffee and cake that morning. Perhaps her brain was telling her to do this, and neither her willpower nor self-discipline could help her defeat the activity of her sleepy brain pushing her toward these poor food choices.

The researchers didn't actually measure food intake per se, or whether it shifted from healthy to unhealthy foods when the volunteers were sleep deprived. But of course, all of us who have suffered from sleep deprivation know what the answer would have been had the measurements been made. If you can't have good sleep, then "feel good" food is often the next best substitute.

The obvious solution is to get more sleep, but this seems to be unattainable for many Americans. The next best solution is to figure out how to prevent the brain from pushing unhealthy but yummy food choices onto the sleepy eater. This means overcoming the brain-generated impulse to eat fatty foods like fried chicken, bacon cheeseburgers, French fries, pizza, or doughnuts.

Normally we try not to give in to our impulses; we don't walk out of museum with a Monet tucked under our arm because we like water lilies or run a red light just because there are no cars on the street. But the impulses to eat the wrong foods are harder to resist. Giving in to an irresistible treat is not going to put you in jail or provide a moving violation ticket. The weight gain won't show up for a few days anyway, and you still may be too sleepy to care.

But if chronic sleepiness is unavoidable, weight gain will also be unavoidable unless strategies are put in place to control the impulse to overeat.

The simplest strategy is to remove oneself from temptation. Have a friend order your coffee so you won't stand at the counter wondering how many doughnuts you should buy. Avoid the snack aisles in the convenience store, or don't go into those stores at all since most of the shelf space is occupied by foods you really should not be eating.

Bargain with yourself. If your brain is demanding something sweet or crunchy, substitute low or fat-free snacks for the more obviously fattening ones. Barbecued rice crackers may not taste quite as good as barbecued potato chips, but they have far fewer calories. Cherry Twizzlers don't have the mouthfeel of chocolate, but they last longer in the mouth and are very low in fat. A chocolate, whipped cream mocha confection tastes wonderful, but a large coffee with frothed skim milk and a sprinkling of brown sugar and cinnamon on the foamed milk will save you hundreds of calories, unnecessary fat, and still give you caffeine.

Exercise. Even a few minutes of intense physical activity can help drive the impulse to overeat out of your system. By elevating your body temperature, increasing oxygen flow through your brain, and sweating, your sleepiness can diminish, and so will the impulse to overeat.

Nap for 10 minutes. If you can find the time, a short nap can refresh your mind and body and drive away eating temptations.

The perfect solution is restorative sleep. But until you are able to get enough sleep, try these suggestions. They may help.

As for my friend with the snoring husband... I wonder if she has tried wearing sound-blocking headphones?

Even in places as seemly well-studied as the national parks of North America, new species are still being discovered. Using ultraviolet light that cause scorpions to fluoresce a ghostly glow, researchers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) have discovered an intriguing new scorpion in Death Valley National Park. They named the species Wernerius inyoensis, after the Inyo Mountains where it was found. The study was published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

This new species is small, only 16 mm in length. "We almost overlooked this one during the survey" said Matthew Graham, a PhD Candidate with the School of Life Sciences at UNLV. Matt discovered the scorpion along with his father who was volunteering that night. "Only a single male individual was found, but the physical uniqueness was enough to identify it as a new species", said Michael Webber, another PhD Candidate from UNLV who described the specimen. This new scorpion appears to be closely related to two other species found over 400 kilometers away at Joshua Tree National Park and along the lower Colorado River. This group of scorpions is most easily identified by the presence of a conspicuous spine at the base of the stinger, the function of which, if any, is unknown.

The previously known species are also rarely observed in the wild, and this elusive nature has led to speculation that these scorpions occur at very low densities or have only sporadic surface activity. However, the rocky terrain in which the previous species were found and the discovery of the new species at the base of a talus slope, hint at the possibility that these scorpions are subterrestrial, spending their lives deep in rock crevices or in the interstitial spaces among piles of loose rock.

Scorpions are quite common within arid regions where they can comprise a large component of biological diversity. The new species was discovered during field surveys funded by the National Park Service as part of efforts to develop better inventories for all organisms occurring within the parks.

"In North America, inventories for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians are pretty well developed, and we have a good handle on higher-order plants, but for many groups of smaller organisms taxonomic inventories will no doubt lead to numerous new discoveries" said Dr. Jef Jaeger, a Research Assistant Professor at UNLV who initiated and oversaw the scorpion surveys.

In the face of regional environmental changes brought about by human actions and the potential for larger changes that global warming may bring, many scientists and resource managers place new importance on efforts to document and catalog species diversity.

A better chair, delivered better.

We fixate on marketing. With my fancy marketing background, I could make big money selling people complex marketing strategies. The best marketing isn?t marketing, but is much more effective and costs a lot less money, too. The problem is it?s work. We don?t like work. Even when it makes us successful. We?d rather do marketing.

Clever Marketing 101 ? Not Sustainable
People buy great marketing once. If the product isn?t great, they?re out.

There are a myriad of marketing firms out there showing you how to get someone to give you more than the three-second glance at a trade show or on your website and how to take them deeper and deeper through a series of bigger and bigger commitments until they finally buy something from you at the bottom of the website.

People tell me this is great marketing, but I believe that by itself, it?s terrible marketing and does more damage than good in the long run. It?s also the lazy man?s approach and because of that, not sustainable.

Recency & Frequency
The two main tenants of good marketing are ?recency? and ?frequency?. If you talked to me recently, but only once, I?m not likely to buy. If you talked to me often a year ago but not since, I?m not likely to buy. You must do both all the time.

This costs a lot of money if you?re doing it via traditional print, radio or TV advertising. One of my clients spends $2million a year in one mid-sized market alone just to stay in the recency/frequency game. If you?re going to use money to do marketing, you usually have to have a lot of it to make enough noise to drown out the other guy with only $250,000.

Then there is the clever website approach, that gets people to go deeper and deeper down the page and finally click on $27.77 (clever marketing says your price should always end in 7). What if people finally respond to your clever website or your $2 million in advertising? Neither of these are your best marketing ? not even close.

Future Clients Come From?
Where do the overwhelming majority of your future customers come from? When I ask this question to live audiences, almost every person will say ? ?from existing clients and existing friends/relationships.? Then why are we investing so much time in cool logos, tortured websites that lead me down a clever spiral path to a commitment, and advertising to find people you?ve never met?

One of my clients has a company called ?Jungle Quest?, a ropes and repelling environment for kids, that is franchising nationally now. In the early days he had $1,000/ mth in profit to reinvest in the company. His first instinct was to buy $1,000/mth in advertising. He decided instead that he would use the $1,000 each month to do something to make the customer experience more ?Jungle-icious? as he describes it.

It was a brilliant move. He improved the look and feel of the environment, added new experiences, improved the clothing on the staff and trained them better, and instituted a customer satisfaction program to stay in touch (recency and frequency). Today virtually all of his future clients come from his existing clients because he has done such a good job delivering a better product. It was hard work, but with a sustainable result ? a better product and better relationships with customers.

Better Marketing? Absolutely.
Most people would say he didn?t improve his marketing, only his product. But in fact he did both because the best marketing you can do is to make a better chair, deliver it with flair, and apply ?recency and frequency? to staying in touch with your existing customers and friends. It?s lot less expensive and more effective than chasing people you?ve never met.

The problem is that it takes work. We have to constantly work at our craft and get better and better at it. And we have to regularly find a way to touch our existing clients, say hello, and let them know we care. All of that sounds too much like work. We?d rather put together a clever website or marketing campaign that does this for us.

People buy great marketing once. If your product isn?t more jungle-icious than the next one, they won?t be back. But if you work hard over a number of years to make your offering distinctive, unique and presented with great customer service, people will refer you to all their friends.
