U.S. Wargames North Korean Regime Collapse, Invasion to Secure Nukes

North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un today ordered his missile batteries to prepare to launch against U.S. and South Korea targets, the latest act of belligerence that has left the United States and the world on edge in recent weeks.

But despite Kim's menacing posture, the U.S. military recently wargamed a different scenario: how many American troops would be needed to go in and secure North Korea's nuclear arsenal if Kim's regime collapsed.

That was the objective this February when the U.S. military played out its Winter Wargame, that the autocratic rule of Kim Jong Un unraveled either from civil unrest or a challenge to his power and his arsenal of nukes was up for grabs. It's a scenario that some believe is more likely than a North Korea attack on the south.

"North Korea has relied on these time honored, very effective tools that dictators have wielded all over the world, and what we know about these tools is that they work until they don't," said Jennifer Lind, a Dartmouth professor who has studied potential missions to North Korea.

Recent years have seen the sudden collapse of dictatorial regimes in Libya and Egypt, and Syria is now in flames with control of its chemical weapons in doubt.

"A regime collapse is always on the table, and we are in an uncertain period of leadership transition," said Rodger Baker, a geopolitical analyst from Stratfor Global Intelligence.

In a war game focusing on the fictitious country "North Brownland," military experts from the Army's forward-looking research arm, the Concept Development and Learning Directorate, assessed how many U.S. troops it would take to go into a North Korea-like place to secure the weapons after a crisis erupted, and how quickly those weapons could be secured.

According to Maj. Gen. Bill Hix, who oversaw the war game, American troops would have to enter the country by air and sea, locate nuclear material in enormous storehouses and unknown underground bunkers, and figure out how to wrest control of nuclear materials and stop reactors. The challenges, Hix said, are significant.

"We looked at this issue of countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, specifically nuclear weapons, and fissile material, and the data and the scientists associated with that kind of enterprise," Hix said.

Hix declined to discuss the game's conclusions, but he cited studies that determined that nearly 100,000 troops would be needed to storm the country and secure nuclear material, and that the armed forces are still in need of nuclear experts who could help with such a mission.

"There are obviously many people in the U.S. government or the U.S. who are experts in nuclear reactors or whatever, but not paid to work in a hostile environment where someone is trying to kill you while you are trying to render safe a reactor or fissile material," the general said.

Defense News, which first reported on the wargame, said it took U.S. troops 56 days to get into the country and secure the weapons.

Lind estimated that the mission would need up to 200,000 additional troops to carry out other aspects of stabilizing the country, including efforts to feed citizens, and locating and disarming conventional weapons and artillery.

Those levels would exceed the peak number of troops in Iraq, which was 165,000, and the peak for Afghanistan, which was 101,000.

"Can we get the job done? I think the answer is yes," Hix said. "Can we do it at the speed that may be required right now? I think we're challenged to do that."

Experts said the U.S. began taking seriously the possibility of a regime collapse in 2008 when the former leader, Kim Jong-il, had a stroke. The concern grew when Kim Jong-il died in 2011 and son Kim Jong Un, who is believed to be 30, took over.

Lind said that though Kim's recent statements have been more frequent and more antagonistic than usual, it would make little sense for North Korea to launch a strike now.

"I don't believe war is coming because North Korea has no rational reason for starting a war which would lead them to no longer exist," Lind said.

"I think the number one mission for the U.S. is to defend South Korea against a North Korea invasion, (and) over time that's gotten less and less plausible," she said. "Second is these collapse scenarios."

"When we think about collapse, we worry about all of that [nuclear material] being flung to the winds and accessed on a global black market," Lind said. "Then of course the nightmare scenario is a terrorist group gets hold of fissile material, or a weapon, or one of the scientists that shows them how to make a nuclear weapon."

Gen. Hix noted that the military is constantly preparing for any crises or scenario it may face in the future, and both he and the other experts agreed that a North Korean collapse is not visibly imminent.

"If we look at various factors, I wouldn't say there's any particular indicator that we should be worried right now, but this could change in a matter of days. We could see a collapse and then be speculating for decades," Lind said.

Baker said that though the probability of a collapse was higher than that of North Korea attacking another country, he expected Kim to continue leading the country, with its economy limping along, in the near future. He said he ultimately expects Kim to begin to open North Korea to the rest of the world.

North Korea warns of 'state of war' with South

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea warned Seoul on Saturday that the Korean Peninsula was entering "a state of war" and threatened to shut down a border factory complex that's the last major symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

Analysts say a full-scale conflict is extremely unlikely, noting that the Korean Peninsula has remained in a technical state of war for 60 years. But the North's continued threats toward Seoul and Washington, including a vow to launch a nuclear strike, have raised worries that a misjudgment between the sides could lead to a clash.

North Korea's threats are seen as efforts to provoke the new government in Seoul, led by President Park Geun-hye, to change its policies toward Pyongyang, and to win diplomatic talks with Washington that could get it more aid. North Korea's moves are also seen as ways to build domestic unity as young leader Kim Jong Un strengthens his military credentials.

On Thursday, U.S. military officials revealed that two B-2 stealth bombers dropped dummy munitions on an uninhabited South Korean island as part of annual defense drills that Pyongyang sees as rehearsals for invasion. Hours later, Kim ordered his generals to put rockets on standby and threatened to strike American targets if provoked.

North Korea said in a statement Saturday that it would deal with South Korea according to "wartime regulations" and would retaliate against any provocations by the United States and South Korea without notice.

"Now that the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK have entered into an actual military action, the inter-Korean relations have naturally entered the state of war," said the statement, which was carried by Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency, referring to the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Provocations "will not be limited to a local war, but develop into an all-out war, a nuclear war," the statement said.

Hours after the statement, Pyongyang threatened to shut down the jointly run Kaesong industrial park, expressing anger over media reports suggesting the complex remained open because it was a source of hard currency for the impoverished North.

"If the puppet group seeks to tarnish the image of the DPRK even a bit, while speaking of the zone whose operation has been barely maintained, we will shut down the zone without mercy," an identified spokesman for the North's office controlling Kaesong said in comments carried by KCNA.

South Korea's Unification Ministry responded by calling the North Korean threat "unhelpful" to the countries' already frayed relations and vowed to ensure the safety of hundreds of South Korean managers who cross the border to their jobs in Kaesong. It did not elaborate.

South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said the country's military remains mindful of the possibility that increasing North Korean drills near the border could lead to an actual provocation.

"The series of North Korean threats ? announcing all-out war, scrapping the cease-fire agreement and the non-aggression agreement between the South and the North, cutting the military hotline, entering into combat posture No. 1 and entering a 'state of war' ? are unacceptable and harm the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula," Kim said.

"We are maintaining full military readiness in order to protect our people's lives and security," he told reporters Saturday.

The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Naval skirmishes in the disputed waters off the Korean coast have led to bloody battles several times over the years.

But on the streets of Seoul on Saturday, South Koreans said they were not worried about an attack from North Korea.

"From other countries' point of view, it may seem like an extremely urgent situation," said Kang Tae-hwan, a private tutor. "But South Koreans don't seem to be that nervous because we've heard these threats from the North before."

The Kaesong industrial park, which is run with North Korean labor and South Korean know-how, has been operating normally, despite Pyongyang shutting down a communications channel typically used to coordinate travel by South Korean workers to and from the park just across the border in North Korea. The rivals are now coordinating the travel indirectly, through an office at Kaesong that has outside lines to South Korea.

North Korea has previously made such threats about Kaesong without acting on them, and recent weeks have seen a torrent of bellicose rhetoric from Pyongyang. North Korea is angry about the South Korea-U.S. military drills and new U.N. sanctions over its nuclear test last month.

Dozens of South Korean firms run factories in the border town of Kaesong. Using North Korea's cheap, efficient labor, the Kaesong complex produced $470 million worth of goods last year.

Pennsylvania Launches Adoption Mobile Web site | GantDaily.com

HARRISBURG ? Pennsylvania has launched one of the nation?s first adoption mobile Web sites, providing easier access for those looking to adopt one of the nearly 2,500 children waiting for a permanent home.

Thirty-eight percent of all visits to Pennsylvania?s Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) Web site, adoptpakids.org, come from mobile devices. With the new mobile site, potential adoptive families who visit adoptpakids.org on their smartphone will automatically be directed to the new mobile site.

?People are no longer limited to using their personal desktop computers anymore; instead, they are using their smartphones and tablets to access information,? Department of Public Welfare Acting Secretary Bev Mackereth said. ?Finding a loving and caring home for children who have a goal of permanency can be a long process, and by creating the adoption mobile website we are making it easier for potential families to view children who deserve a forever home.?

Accessing the adoption Web site from anywhere anytime provides convenience to both potential families and case workers. It offers search capabilities for viewing updated and newly added adoption profiles, a photo album of children waiting to be adopted, and information on post-permanency services and how to become a foster or adoptive parent.

SWAN is a broad-based cooperative effort and centralized information and facilitation service funded and overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The network includes county children and youth agencies; juvenile court judges; foster and adoptive parents; private adoption agencies; the Pennsylvania Adoption Exchange; and many others working together on behalf of children who need permanent homes.

The SWAN program serves children in the custody of county children and youth agencies and supports their efforts in expediting permanency services.

For more information on SWAN visit www.adoptpakids.org, call 1-800-585-SWAN (7926) or ?like? SWAN on Facebook.

Teens' struggles with peers forecast long-term adult relationships

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Teenagers' struggles to connect with their peers in the early adolescent years while not getting swept along by negative peer influences predict their capacity to form strong friendships and avoid serious problems even ten years later. Those are the conclusions of a new longitudinal study by researchers at the University of Virginia that appears in the journal Child Development.

"Overall, we found that teens face a high-wire act with their peers," explains Joseph P. Allen, Hugh P. Kelly Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia, who led the study. "They need to establish strong, positive connections with them while at the same time establishing independence in resisting deviant peer influences. Those who don't manage this have significant problems as much as a decade later."

Researchers followed about 150 teens over a 10-year period (starting at age 13 and continuing to 23) to learn about the long-term effects of their peer struggles early in adolescence. They gathered information from multiple sources -- the teens themselves, their parents and peers, and by observing teens' later interactions with romantic partners. The teens comprised a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse group.

Teens who had trouble connecting well with their peers in early adolescence had difficulty establishing close friendships in young adulthood. Teens who didn't connect well at 13 also had more difficulty managing disagreements in romantic relationships as adults.

Teens who had trouble establishing some autonomy and independence with peers (especially with respect to minor forms of deviance such as shoplifting and vandalism) were found to be at higher risk for problems with alcohol and substance use, and for illegal behavior, almost a decade later.

Conversely, teens who were seen as desirable companions -- those deemed empathetic, able to see things from different perspectives and control their impulses, and having a good sense of humor -- were more likely to have positive relationships in young adulthood.

Teens who were able to establish some autonomy vis a vis peers' influences were more likely to avoid problematic behavior in young adulthood, with teens who showed they were able to think for themselves in the face of negative peer influences using less alcohol as early adults and having fewer problems with alcohol and substance abuse as young adults. But teens who were seen as desirable companions were more likely to have higher levels of alcohol use in early adulthood and future problems associated with alcohol and substance use.

"The findings make it clear that establishing social competence in adolescence and early adulthood is not a straightforward process, but involves negotiating challenging and at times conflicting goals between peer acceptance and autonomy with regard to negative peer influences," Allen notes.

"Teaching teens how to stand up for themselves in ways that preserve and deepen relationships -- to become their own persons while still connecting to others -- is a core task of social development that parents, teachers, and others can all work to promote," adds Allen.

Teens who managed both of these goals simultaneously -- connecting with peers while retaining their autonomy -- were rated by their parents as being most competent overall by age 23. "There is a positive pathway through the peer jungle of early adolescence," says Allen, "but it is a tricky one for many teens to find and traverse."

(AP) ? He still goes by "Bergoglio" when speaking to friends, seems reluctant to call himself pope and has decided to live in the Vatican hotel rather than the grand papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace.

It might seem as if Pope Francis is in a bit of denial over his new job as leader of the world's 1.2-billion Catholics. Or perhaps he's simply changing the popular idea of what it means to be pope, keeping the no-frills style he cultivated as archbishop of Buenos Aires in ways that may have broad implications for the church.

The world has already seen how Francis has cast aside many trappings of the papacy, refusing to don the red velvet cape Benedict XVI wore for official occasions and keeping the simple, iron-plated pectoral cross he used as bishop and archbishop.

On Thursday, his belief that a pope's job is to serve the world's lowliest will be on display when he washes the feet of a dozen young inmates at a juvenile detention center in Rome. Previous popes have celebrated the Holy Thursday ritual, which re-enacts Christ's washing of his disciples' feet before his crucifixion, by washing the feet of priests in one of Rome's most ornate basilicas.

Such moves hint, even at this early stage, only two weeks into his papacy, at an apparent effort by Francis to demystify the office of pope.

Unlike his predecessors, he doesn't sign his name "Pope Francis," ending his official correspondence simply "Francis."

To those closest he is still Bergoglio, and this week, Italian state radio broadcast a voice mail he left wishing a friend Happy Birthday. "It's Bergoglio," the pope said, using the surname he was born with.

Even on Day One, Francis didn't acknowledge he was pope.

Speaking on the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica after his election the night of March 13, Francis told the tens of thousands gathered there that the cardinals' task during the conclave had been to "give Rome a bishop."

And bishop of Rome is the title he has emphasized repeatedly ever since ? not vicar of Christ, or any of his other official titles.

"I do think there is something about trying to reduce the awesomeness, the grandeur and majesty of the papacy," said John Allen Jr., Vatican columnist for the National Catholic Reporter. "Part of this is just his personality. He's never liked pomp and circumstance."

Indeed. Even after he became Argentina's top church official in 2001, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio never lived in the ornate church mansion that Pope John Paul II stayed in when visiting, preferring simple rooms in a downtown building, warmed by a small stove on frigid weekends when the heat was turned off. He did his own cooking and rode the bus to get around town.

In that same vein, Francis announced this week that he wasn't moving into the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace and would stay instead in the Vatican's Santa Marta residence, the antiseptically clean, institutional-style hotel where he and the 114 cardinals who elected him pope were sequestered during the conclave.

Calling the hotel home, Francis indicated that he wants to live in a community with ordinary folk, not the gilded cage of the Apostolic Palace.

He will eat in the common dining room as he has for the past two weeks, and celebrate 7 a.m. Mass in the hotel chapel as he has each day, inviting Vatican gardeners, street sweepers, hotel workers and newspaper staff to attend.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the decision to stay put in the hotel had been taken "for now."

"We'll see how it works," he said.

In one concession, Francis did move in recent days from the hotel's cramped Room 207, where he had stayed as cardinal, into Room 201, the larger papal suite, which has a study and sitting room to receive guests. The furnishings are a step up from the simple fare of the rest of the hotel: dark wood armoires and a bed with a matching headboard carved with an image of Christ's face.

Francis' initial refusal to move into the hotel's papal suite is perhaps understandable, given the reluctance with which he accepted the job in the first place.

On Wednesday, the Vatican revealed what Francis said in the Sistine Chapel when he was formally asked if he accepted the outcome of the vote. "I am a big sinner. Trusting in the mercy and patience of God, in suffering, I accept," he answered.

The decision not to take up residence in the Apostolic Palace might also signal a desire to keep his distance from the dysfunctional Vatican government Francis has inherited. One of his major tasks will be to rid the Vatican bureaucracy of the mismanagement, petty turf battles and allegations of corruption that were revealed in leaks of papal documents last year.

Francis does go to work each day at his "office" in the Apostolic Palace, where he meets with various Vatican officials. He uses the ornate Clementine Hall for larger audiences, such as his first formal addresses to representatives of the world's religions and the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See.

In his March 20 audience with religious leaders, Francis sent an important signal about his view of the papacy and its relationship with other Christians. He addressed the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, as "my brother" ? a fraternal nod to a church that split from Rome 1,000 years ago and has remained separated in part over disputes about the primacy of the pope.

To make that message abundantly clear, Francis' chair was on the ground ? the same level as all the other religious leaders ? and not on a raised platform. Two days later, when Francis greeted diplomats accredited to the Holy See, his chair was up on a platform.

"To have a simpler view, less grandiose sense of the trappings of the papacy might be saying, 'I want to be able to relate to you at a different level,'" said Anton Vrame of the Greek Orthodox archdiocese in the U.S.

Francis' gestures, choices and emphasis were clearly an indication of his personality and the simplicity for which Jesuits are known, Vrame said.

"Is it a further simplification of the papacy that we've seen over the years? Potentially. It remains to be seen," he said.

Israel sends more medics to border with Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's military says it's beefing up medical teams along the border with Syria following several cases of wounded Syrians crossing the frontier to seek medical assistance.

A military official said on Thursday there have been "numerous incidents" in recent months in which Syrians wounded in the fighting in their country arrived at the frontier for first aid from Israeli medics.

Eleven of them were taken and treated at Israeli hospitals, including one who died from his wounds on Wednesday. Others returned home after their conditions have improved.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity under military protocol. He says the military's focus in the Israeli-held Golan Heights is still on security and defense but that Israel sent extra medical teams to the area realizing more wounded could soon arrive.

Diverse bacteria on fresh fruits, vegetables vary with produce type, farming practices

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Fresh fruit and vegetables carry an abundance of bacteria on their surfaces, not all of which cause disease. In the first study to assess the variety of these non-pathogenic bacteria, scientists report that these surface bacteria vary depending on the type of produce and cultivation practices.

The results are published March 27 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Jonathan Leff and Noah Fierer at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The study focused on eleven produce types that are often consumed raw, and found that certain species like spinach, tomatoes and strawberries have similar surface bacteria, with the majority of these microbes belonging to one family. Fruit like apples, peaches and grapes have more variable surface bacterial communities from three or four different groups. The authors also found differences in surface bacteria between produce grown using different farming practices.

The authors suggest several factors that may contribute to the differences they observed, including farm locations, storage temperature or time, and transport conditions. These surface bacteria on produce can impact the rate at which food spoils, and may be the source of typical microbes on kitchen surfaces. Previous studies have shown that although such microbes don't necessarily cause disease, they may still interact with, and perhaps inhibit the growth of disease-causing microbes. The results of this new research suggest that people may be exposed to substantially different bacteria depending on the types of produce they consume.

Pope Francis changes up Holy Thursday tradition

ROME (AP) ? Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of a dozen inmates at a juvenile detention center in a Holy Thursday ritual that he celebrated for years as archbishop and is continuing now that he is pope. Two of the 12 were young women, a remarkable choice given that the church's current liturgical law says only men should participate.

The Mass was held in the Casal del Marmo facility in Rome, where 46 young men and women currently are detained. Many of them are Gypsies or North African migrants, and the 12 selected for the foot-washing rite included Orthodox and Muslim detainees, news reports said.

Because the inmates were mostly minors ? the facility houses inmates aged 14-to-21 ? the Vatican and Italian Justice Ministry limited media access inside. But Vatican Radio carried the Mass live, and Francis told the detainees that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion in a gesture of love and service.

"This is a symbol, it is a sign ? washing your feet means I am at your service," Francis told the youngsters. "Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us. This is what I do. And I do it with my heart. I do this with my heart because it is my duty, as a priest and bishop I must be at your service."

Later, the Vatican released a limited video of the ritual, showing Francis washing black feet, white feet, male feet, female feet and even a foot with tattoos. Kneeling on the stone floor as the 12 youngsters sat above him, the 76-year-old Francis poured water from a silver chalice over each foot, dried it with a simple cotton towel and then bent over to kiss each one.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio would celebrate the ritual foot-washing in jails, hospitals or hospices ? part of his ministry to the poorest and most marginalized of society. It's a message that he is continuing now that he is pope, saying he wants a church "for the poor."

Previous popes would carry out the foot-washing ritual on Holy Thursday in Rome's grand St. John Lateran basilica. The 12 people chosen for the ritual would always be priests to represent Christ's 12 apostles.

That Francis would include women in this re-enactment is remarkable given current liturgical rules that restrict the ritual to men.

Canon lawyer Edward Peters, who is an adviser to the Holy See's top court, noted in a blog that the Congregation for Divine Worship in 1988 said in a letter to bishops that "The washing of the feet of chosen men ... represents the service and charity of Christ who came 'not to be served, but to serve.'"

Peters noted that bishops over the years have successfully petitioned Rome for an exemption to allow women to participate, but that the law on the issue is clear.

"By disregarding his own law in this matter, Francis violates, of course, no divine directive," Peters wrote Thursday. "What he does do, I fear, is set a questionable example."

Others welcomed the example he set.

"The pope's washing the feet of women is hugely significant because including women in this part of the Holy Thursday Mass has been frowned on ? and even banned ? in some dioceses," said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of "The Jesuit Guide."

"It shows the all-embracing love of Christ, who ministered to all he met: man or woman, slave or free, Jew or Gentile," he said.

After the Mass, Francis greeted each of the inmates and gave each one an Easter egg.

"Don't lose hope," he said. "Understand? With hope you can always go on."

One of the inmates then asked him why he had come to visit them. Francis said it was to "help me to be humble, as a bishop should be." He said he wanted to come "from my heart. Things from the heart don't have an explanation," he said.

Italian Justice Minister Paola Severino, who has made easing Italy's woefully overcrowded prisons a priority, attended the Mass.

Five Favorite Films with Kristin Chenoweth

Kristin Chenoweth first made a dent in the public consciousness as Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, a Broadway smash about the early years of the The Wizard of Oz witches. Since then, she's maintained a healthy career in television, earning praise for her performances in The West Wing, Pushing Daisies, and Glee. She's even become a staple at awards shows, either as a host or, in the case of the 2013 Oscars, as a red carpet interviewer and performer.

In Family Weekend, opening Friday in limited release, Chenoweth plays the snarky mother of a high-achieving teenager who takes her parents hostage to protest their indifference to her life. In an interview with RT, Chenoweth shared her favorite movies, and discussed the differences between working on the stage and screen and why she's drawn to dark comedies.

Okay, Steel Magnolias. I have six aunts, and they're all like my mom, and they're all insane, but in a good way. That movie makes me think of them. And I'm also Southern, so it's like, "Mmm, I get it."

I love Shawshank Redemption. Whenever it's on, I have to watch it. I think it's so well written and so well done. I love the story.

I'm kind of a weirdo; I love prison movies and war movies, which leads me into Schindler's List. I think it really captured a moment in time that we aren't proud of as a human race, and I just think [Steven] Spielberg knocked it out of the park.

I like Inglourious Basterds; it's another one of my top movies. I love [Quentin] Tarantino, and I don't want to say I like violence, but I'm kind of like a dude in a lot of ways.

What was the other one I always watch when it's on? Oh, this is dorky... This says everything about who I am: The Sound of Music. It's just my favorite movie musical, and, I mean, it's the reason I wanted to become a singer and an actress, was because of Julie Andrews and the Von Trapps. That kind of pretty much explains who I am, which is one big fat dichotomy.

RT: It's kind of cheesy in a lot of ways, but you can't help loving it. I always get excited during the part where the nuns have sabotaged the Nazis' car.

KC: They have, like, the carburetor and... [laughs] The nuns are actually some of my favorite parts. I love it. I can't help it. I just can't help it.

Next, Chenowith talks about her new film, the differences of working in film and on stage, and why she's drawn to dark comedies.

Adventures in Automotive Branding: That ?Distinctive Fender Sound ...

Detroit is a funny market when it comes to advertising. In addition to the ads, commercials and billboards that you might see or hear in other markets from national and regional advertisers, there is some advertising that is specific to the automotive industry, usually from tier 1 vendors trying to make a sale to one of the domestic automakers. As a result, there might be a billboard on I-75 about, for example, exhaust systems, suspension components or audio equipment that is targeted at a relatively small audience, the people at Chrysler, GM and Ford who make the final engineering and purchasing decisions.

Driving home from an errand I heard the announcer on WJR, ?the great voice of the Great Lakes broadcasting from the golden tower of the Fisher Building?, start talking about the synergy when two musicians first meet, discuss common influences, then get together, plug in their instruments and start to write songs. I thought he was going to discuss when Lennon met McCartney or when Richards met Jagger but in fact it was a live commercial?announcement?for how Panasonic and Fender have partnered to sell Fender Premium Audio branded stereos to the OEMs. Apparently the deal that VW has to sell Panasonic made components labeled with Fender?s brand is not an exclusive one.

1959 - 1960 Fender Bassman Photo: RocknRollvintage.com

It?s interesting that Panasonic thinks that Fender is a brand name that has more cachet with consumers when it comes to premium audio equipment than the Panasonic brand name itself. It?s doubly interesting because Fender has, until now, not been a brand for consumer audio equipment, premium or otherwise. This deal should make it clear that just because your car may be branded with the name of a particular audio company doesn?t mean that specific company actually made or even sold what?s installed in your car. The fact that your car comes with Fender Premium Audio doesn?t mean that Fender made the stuff any more than buying a Bill Blass Edition Lincoln meant that you were getting upholstery that came out Mr. Blass? workshops, if he had them. A brand is a brand, just a mark.

Actually it?s triply interesting since the announcer in the commercial touted ?Fender?s distinctive sound?. Now I don?t play guitar but I do make a little bit of noise in key on the harmonica, and if there is something ?distinctive about the sound of Fender amps and loudspeaker cabinets it is their distinctive distortion. As you can see from that link, Jack Baruth discussed this back when the deal with VW was first announced, and we shared a laugh about this, but I never thought they?d actually use ?Fender?s distinctive sound? to sell high fidelity audio systems.

The ideal amplifier, electronically speaking, adds no distinctive audio signature. What goes in comes out, only with more gain. There?s no such thing as the ideal amplifier, but makers of audio equipment used to reproduce music generally design and test equipment to have as little distortion as possible. Sometime in the history of rock and roll or the blues, though, someone figured out that if you turned the amps up loud enough so that the preamp would overdrive the output tubes to distortion levels (this was before transistors and other solid state components), you could end up with some very cool sounding music. Not all distortion is unpleasing. While odd order harmonics are what makes fingernails on a blackboard so grating, the ear tends to like even order harmonics. Guitar players and players of other electric instruments, like harmonica players digging through a box of half-century or older ceramic microphone cartridges, are going for the right combination of distortion. Also, if you chose the right sized drivers for your loudspeaker, you could get them to break up and distort in a pleasing and artistic manner as well. The net result is what players call ?tone?.

That?s the reason why guitar players love the sound of amps like the Fender Bassman, and others derived from Fender?s 1950s classics like Marshalls. They love the distinctive distortion

That?s not the case with home audio equipment and likewise the stuff you want in your car. That gear is intended to be as much like the theoretical ?ideal amplifier as possible. I?m quite sure that the Fender branded audio equipment that is being sold to OEM?s by Panasonic has fine distortion specs. CNET ranked the stereo in the VW Beetle Turbo as their personal favorite for 2011, saying it competed well with audiophile home equipment. I?m sure that Fender Premium Audio equipment very accurately reproduces ?Fender?s distinctive sound? well. It may not make my ears bleed but it does make my head hurt.

The last election cycle in the United States brought forth the term ?low information voter?. That?s made me think about low information consumers. There is, after all, a reason why Panasonic has hooked up with Fender. The Fender brand has recognition well beyond the relatively small community of electric guitar players and other folks familiar with guitar amps. I don?t begrudge Fender and Panasonic and VW and whoever else decides to spec Fender Premium Audio in their cars the right to exploit that brand identification. I just think that they?re treating people like low information consumers and that most of Fender?s existing customers must laugh in derision when they hear about ?Fender?s distinctive sound? when it comes to car audio. The fact that Panasonic and Fender think that the folks who make engineering and purchasing decisions at car companies are also low information consumers is noteworthy as well.

Potential Chagas vaccine candidate shows unprecedented efficacy

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Scientists are getting closer to a Chagas disease vaccine, something many believed impossible only 10 years ago. Research from the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has resulted in a safe vaccine candidate that is simple to produce and shows a greater than 90 percent protection rate against chronic infection in mice.

In a paper published online in PLOS ONE, the researchers describe how they identified and tested potential Trypanosoma cruzi (also known as T. cruzi or Chagas disease) antigen candidates and delivery models to establish the safety and efficacy of a vaccine formulation known asTcVac3. This potential vaccine could halt the irreversible heart and organ damage that afflicts approximately 30 percent of those infected with Chagas.

"This signals a scientific breakthrough -- unprecedented vaccine efficacy for a common parasitic disease with no cure for chronic sufferers," said lead author Nisha Garg, PhD, professor of microbiology, immunology and pathology at UTMB. "If this vaccine proves practical, it could be approved in as few as five years for use in canines, which are reservoir hosts of the disease. As many as 20 percent of dogs may be infected in Texas alone, developing the same heart conditions as humans but mistaken by vets for heartworm."

The study also provides further evidence that a human Chagas vaccine is possible, a topic of debate among some who still believe that Chagas heart disease is the result of an autoimmune disorder, she added.

T. cruzi, transmitted by the triatomine insect, or "kissing bug," is prevalent in almost all Latin American countries and is becoming more common in the U.S. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 10 million people -- mostly children -- are infected worldwide. Approximately 13,000 die each year from the complications of Chagas-induced heart disease -- a result of the chronic infection Garg and her team aim to vaccinate against. It is estimated that the global economic burden of Chagas is about $7 billion a year.

TcVac3: The Path of Discovery

TcVac3 is the result of rigorous computational/bioinformatics analysis and screening of the T. cruzi genome for potential candidate antigens over several years by Garg and her team. These analyses led the researchers to three potential antigens (TcG1, TcG2 and TcG4) for further investigation.

Next, they began testing these antigens and potential vaccine delivery models -- how the components are arranged in the actual vaccine -- to determine the best approaches.

Early experiments proved that delivery of the candidate antigens by a DNA-prime/protein boost approach, along with co-delivery of IL-12 and GM-CSF cytokine adjuvants meant to enhance the immune response, was effective in generating antibody and T cell responses capable of providing more than 90 percent control of acute infection and parasite burden in infected mice.

Recognizing, however, that this vaccine delivery model was quite complex, the scientists sought to simplify the vaccine using a DNA-prime/Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-boost approach -- a delivery model that offers many advantages: it can accommodate multiple foreign genes in its genome; may be administered by a variety of routes; has an excellent safety record; and has been shown to generate immune responses to a variety of foreign antigens. MVA itself can act as an adjuvant since it provides a signal to the innate immune system and can boost T cells.

Based on preliminarystudies by the researchers that showed this delivery model to be potent, the scientists next tested the protective efficacy of TcVac3, constituted of just the TcG2 and TcG4 candidates and lacking the adjuvants, delivered by the DNA/MVA approach.

With two doses of the vaccine, the mice with TcVac3-induced antibodies exhibited 92 to 96 percent protection against chronic infection. They found that the DNA/MVA approach increased the vaccine efficacy enough to omit one of the antigens and the adjuvants, making it a much simpler but still highly effective vaccine.

"Because Chagas is most prevalent in developing countries, it is essential that a potential vaccine be inexpensive to develop and easy to deliver," said Garg. "TcVac3 accomplishes this goal, making it not just an effective candidate, but an ideal one."

Future research will determine if the vaccine composition can be simplified even further. In addition, the scientists are already conducting related trials in canines. Garg and her team are also working on pre-clinical trials of human patient samples, testing for immune response in patients that are already infected but not showing signs of chronic disease. Results of both studies are anticipated later this year.

?The Korean Zombie? asks Georges St-Pierre to stop wearing ?Rising Sun? symbol at fights

UFC featherweight Chan Sung Jung has a fight with Ricardo Lamas coming up in July. The fight will likely have title implications, and will give "The Korean Zombie" a chance to prove he belongs at the top of the UFC's 145-lb. class. But the upcoming fight didn't keep Jung from speaking up to one of the UFC's biggest stars.

Jung posted a letter on his Facebook page to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre about the Rising Sun symbol GSP wore to his fight with Nick Diaz.

Dear Mr. Georges St. Pierre
Hi, My name is Chan Sung Jung from South Korea. As one of many Koreans who like you as an incredible athlete, I feel like I should tell you that many Korean fans, including myself, were shocked to see you in your gi designed after the Japanese 'Rising Sun Flag'. For Asians, this flag is a symbol of war crimes, much like the German Hakenkreuzflagge. Did you know that? I hope not.

Just like Nazis, the Japanese also committed atrocities under the name of 'Militarism'. You can easily learn what they've done by googling (please do), although it's only the tiny tip of an enormous iceberg.

Furthermore, the Japanese Government never gave a sincere apology, and still to this day, so many victims are dying in pain, heartbroken, without being compensated. But many westerners like to wear clothes designed after the symbol under which so many war crimes and so much tragedy happened, which is ridiculous.

I know most of them are not militarists. I know most of them do not approve unjustified invasion, torture, massacre, etc. They're just ignorant. It's such a shame that many westerners are not aware of this tragic fact. Wearing Rising Sun outfits is as bad as wearing clothes with the Nazi mark on it, if not worse.

Since you're influenced by Japanese Martial Arts, your wearing a headband designed after Japanese flag is understandable. But again, that huge 'Rising Sun' on your Gi means something else.

Many people say GSP is the best Welterweight fighter throughout history, to which I totally agree. This means you have a great influence on every single fan of yours all around the world. And I do believe your wearing 'the symbol of War Crime' is a very bad example for them, not to mention for yourself.

So, what do you reckon? Do you want to wear the same Gi next time as well?

The Rising Sun flag was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II, and it was banned by the United Nations in 1945. Jung is not the only person to have an issue with seeing it used by an athlete. During the 2012 Olympics, Japanese gymnasts wore a leotard that was inspired by the Rising Sun, and some South Koreans were not happy about it.

When one-time MMA sponsor Hoelzer Reich used Nazi imagery on the gear UFC and WEC fighters wore into the cage, the promotions banned their items from the cage. Jung has the courage to speak up to a fighter he admittedly admires. GSP and the UFC owe him a response.

UPDATE: Both GSP and Hayabusa, the company who made GSP's gi, have apologized. GSP posted a statement from Hayabusa:

Since Georges St-Pierre wore our walkout gi at UFC 158 we have received attention surrounding the negative connotation of the rising sun graphic used. The last thing we want is to offend or alienate anyone with the choice of design on our products.

We at Hayabusa have the utmost respect for culture and history and appreciate all of our customers worldwide. As such, we accept full responsibility for this design and are taking all complaints and comments very seriously.

The gi worn by GSP will not be brought to market. In addition, we will be very conscious of this specific design element when developing future communication materials and products.

Please accept our sincerest apology for any offence this has caused. If you have any questions or comments regarding this matter, please feel free to discuss it with us at customerservice@hayabusafightwear.com. One of our representatives will be happy to assist you.

And GSP added:

I'd like to also personally apologize to anyone who was offended by this. I am very sorry, that was never my intention.

Both GSP and Hayabusa acted quickly to apologize. Though it would have been better if the symbol was never used, Jung used the moment to educate others on the issues with the symbol. For that, he should be commended.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

Fiesta del Asado - Foodepedia

My writing career began in London and inevitably when you take a cab to a restaurant you?re bound to end up in a conversation about food. What London cabbies don?t seem to understand is that Birmingham, my home city, has a lot more to offer than curry or food ?cooked by that Purnell geezer?.

Fiesta del Asado is a prime example and the second city?s first Argentine Asado restaurant. It?s located on the Hagley Road, nearby to affluent areas of Harbourne and Edgbaston, and boasts an impressive team of the award-winning men behind Lasan, Jabber Khan and Aktar Islam, along with creative genius Andrew Kleanthous.

The interior has a nice rustic feel to it with plenty of dark wooden fixtures and floors with exposed red brick jumping out from clean white walls dotted with open cupboards filled with clay pots and trinkets. The open plan layout gives you a feeling of freedom without isolation and the kitchen remains visible from many tables, with a bold wall of cured ham on display.

The bar is busy when we arrive with bottles being shared amongst large groups. It?s a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, low lighting assisted by warm glows of the candles on each table and the open fireplace in one of the main rooms. The tables are neatly presented, as are the staff members, who are excellent in helping you select your food and drink for the evening.

A few nibbles of freshly baked bread with chorizo pate and slices of Iberico ham are a welcome beginning before our starters of Empanadas arrive. We have a selection of three flavours, each with its own distinct shape and size. I begin with chicken and sweetcorn, which is tasty and useful as good fodder to try out the accompanying roasted red pepper chutney and delicious spring onion & cilantro sauce. I choose not to add anything to the beef and potato Empanada as it?s balanced nicely and is the clear favourite. The final flavour combination of spinach and provolone cheese is wonderfully soft and creamy and the pastry is light.

After a couple of glasses of white wine we move on to sharing a bottle of red, recommended by the house to accompany our selection of meat main course and given plenty of breathing time before it hits our lips. Seeing as we?re sampling a selection from the grill, or parrilla, it?s a broader range red that manages to complement the lamb, sausage, beef and chicken we?re about to receive.

A main course for two of Parrilla Mixta reaches the table and immediately whets the appetite. A dish piled with freshly grilled succulent cuts of meat, slowly smoked over specially selected applewood chips to seal in the flavour, is accompanied by side dishes of truffle cream potato salad, homemade fries with garlic and a green salad.

The first of the two sausages is a deeply rich morcilla that crumbles apart revealing little flakes of caramlised red onion, which help to clean away the thick texture of the sausage. Then we have a Chistorra Artysan, a spiral sausage much like a chorizo without the large lumps of fat or gristle and just as juicy. A clean chicken wing, moist and slightly charred, is a perfect follow-on to remove any lingering paprika taste. The truffle cream potato salad is pretty spectacular and definitely worth ordering.

A cutlet of lamb, beautifully pink in the middle without burning the outside, is a thick piece of meat and yet avoids being undercooked and flooding the plate with blood. Two chunks of rump steak with a thick outer coat of fat that pumps flavour with each chew are devoured quickly. However my favourite from the selection is the thinly sliced bavette steak with charred sear marks, giving a nice little crunch but a pink inside that is velvety soft.

As you can imagine, we?re pretty full at this point but I can?t avoid trying the sugary churros with spicy hot chocolate dipping sauce. They?re a lot lighter than I?d imagined and the spicy hot chocolate sauce is cheeky but not fiery enough to put off the less adventurous diner.

Overall we?ve really enjoyed the evening. Not only have the management team mastered the cooking technique but they?ve also embraced the term Asado in its other meaning, that of being a social event. You can expect a lot more to come from this restaurant, not just in the menu offering. I?d recommend going and keeping up to date with what?s just around the corner.

SteveLendmanBlog: Payday Loans: Modern Day Usury

Payday Loans: Modern Day Usury

by Stephen Lendman

Payday loans let predatory lenders rip off unwary borrowers. They provide short-term unsecured quick cash. It comes at a high price. It matches the worst of loan shark practices.

The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) calls itself a "non-partisan organization that works to protect homeownership and family wealth by fighting predatory lending practices."

It's "witnessed, studied, and fought against outrageous lending abuses." They "strip billions of dollars from (unwary) American families."

In July 2009, its report discussed predatory payday lending. It's titled "Phantom Demand: Short-term due date generates need for repeat payday loans, accounting for 76% of total volume."

In other words, debt entrapment assures repeat business. Borrowers need new loans to service old ones. They also need help to meet other obligations.

It's a scam. It extracts up to an 400% annual percentage rate (APR). It requires short-term balloon payments. They're do every two weeks. They extract 25 - 50% of borrower income. Doing so leaves them unable to handle daily obligations.?

It forces them into new loans. If not repaid, they're automatically rolled over. Added interest compounds. What a way to make money. It's sure fire profit-making. It works as planned.

In 2010, three million Americans got payday loans online. Doing so expands a lucrative profit source. By 2016, forecasts estimate 60% of payday borrowing this way. It's nearly double 2011's level.

Offshore sites operate. Doing so circumvents state regulations. Shell companies run them. Anything goes is policy. Consumer protections don't exist. Scams are easier than ever. Clever crooks find new ways to steal. It's easy when no one stops them.

New loans follow old ones. Many happen almost immediately. At times it's in a day or less. Doing so locks borrowers in debt. That's what lenders have in mind.

Borrowers "generally open new loans in rapid succession." Around 87% of new ones occur during the next pay period. Half come when borrowers are first able. They're after partially repaid old ones.

"Churning" guarantees big profits. Nearly 59 million loans exceed $20 billion. Loans to one-time borrowers account for 2% of volume.

Churned loans produce $4.5 billion in annual fees. Unwary borrowers don't know what they're getting themselves into. They enticed with first-time discounted or free terms.?

One-fourth of all customers are Social Security recipients. Most getting loans have limited means.

Borrowing becomes habitual. Interest way exceeds principle. Debt entrapment extracts it longterm. Business models prioritize it.

They rip off borrowers for profit. A typical one repays $793 for every $325 borrowed. Abusive lending is longstanding. It's rising exponentially. Hard times increase customers.

Consumer protections don't safeguard them. They're vulnerable to abuse. Debt entrapment devastates them. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia prohibit or impose restrictions. They're too weak to matter.

Several other states have interest rate caps. Banks make payday loans. Wells Fargo, US Bankcorp, Fifth Third Bancorp, and others offer "checking advance products."?

They replicate bad practices. They drain money from low income communities.

They prioritizes grand theft. They circumvent state laws. They do it with impunity. They get away with lawless practices. They prioritize doing so.

They needn't worry. They have friends in high places. Money power runs America. Whatever it wants it gets. Predatory lending harms vulnerable borrowers. Low income households suffer most.

Harvard Business School found payday lending responsible for repeated overdrafts. Checking accounts are lost.

In 2006, Congress capped interest rates for active duty personnel and their families. It did so at 36% APR. Banks find ways of getting around it.?

They get virtually free money. They use it to make more of it. They make it the old fashioned way. They steal it. Payday loans produce big profits. They're at the expense of unwary borrowers.

Companies like Advance America, First Cash, and EZCORP get JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and/or Bank of America funding. They can't operate without it.?

Banks say they're serving customers. It's a lucrative partnership. They do big time stealing on their own. Their business models prioritize it.

In July 2011, the Center for Public Integrity urged payday loan rollover limits. They're supposed to provide emergency short-term cash.

Experts say it's not so. Multiple rollovers follow initial loans. Huge costs are incurred. National limits need to be imposed. Truth in lending rules need clarification. Nothing has been done so far. Grand theft continues.

CRL told Patricia's story. It's typical of others. She's a retired nursing home aide. She had medical issues. She moved closer to family members.

Doing so required paying double rent for a month. She also had relocation expenses. They were more than she could afford.

She sought payday lender help. She took three loans. Two were for $200. Another was for $150. Short-term interest cost her $123.50. She had to repay $673.50.

She had limited means. She couldn't afford it. For nearly two years, she struggled. She paid monthly finance charges. It cost over $2,700 in interest. Her original loan remained unchanged.?

Most others are entrapped the same way. Predatory lenders scam them. They're on their own without help. Getting in bed with loan sharks leaves them unprotected.

Lenders offer a lifeline, they claim. They use it to scam unwary borrowers. They entrap them longterm in debt. Their business model prioritizes usury.

Variants of payday lending are longstanding. Long before credit cards and other current practices, "salary lenders" offered one-week loans. They did so at 120 - 500% APRs.

Illegal practices followed. They included wage garnishment, public embarrassment, extortion, and threats of job loss.

States tried curbing abusive practices. Usury rate caps were imposed. Some worked. Some didn't. Clever lenders find ways around laws and regulations.

Post-WW II, mass-market consumer financing grew. Wide-ranging credit products followed. They included mortgages, credit cards, and other ways to stimulate purchases.

State laws were inadequate. National standards were needed. They weren't forthcoming. Regulations were eased. Federally insured depositories, mortgage lenders, credit card companies, and other financial institutions benefitted.

Washington freed them from state usury laws. Deregulation accelerated. ?Developments encouraged modern-day payday lending.

In 1993, it began. Check Into Cash began operating in Tennessee. Others followed. So did exponential growth. Small and larger operators benefit. Borrowers lose out.

Federal law is largely absent. Inadequate protections exist. Dodd-Frank created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Financial reform gave Wall Street a free pass. It's a stealth scheme for global monetary control.

CFPB is pretense. It's more subterfuge than real. It's cover for business as usual. It lets clever operators circumvent rules and regulations.?

They take full advantage. They do as they please. They do so with impunity. Consumers get hung out to dry.

Richard Cordray heads CFPB. He's a Democrat party insider. He's a former Ohio attorney general, treasurer, legislator and state solicitor. Obama installed him by recess appointment.

He's a Chicago Law School grad. He clerked for conservative Judge Robert Bork on the US Court for the District of Columbia Circuit. He later did for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

He's part of the system. It's manipulative and dirty. Money power controls it. It shouldn't surprise. Whatever Big Money wants it gets. Expect little help for payday borrowers. Expect more smoke than fire.

On January 7, CRL headlined "(Five) US Senators Ask Regulators to Stop Bank Payday lending." Comments addressed Fed Chairman Bernanke, Comptroller Thomas Curry and FDIC chairman Martin Gruenberg.

At least four major banks make triple-digit payday loans. Doing so replicates others entrapping borrowers. Expect no relief.?

Letters don't help. Writing them is useless. They substitute for policy. Binding legislation is needed. None is forthcoming.?

Bankers and other predatory lenders are free to keep stealing. They take full advantage. It's the American way. Bipartisan complicity assures it. Nothing in prospect suggests change.

Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at lendmanstephen@sbcglobal.net.?
