Nokia's buried-but-beloved N900 smartphone has performed many parlor tricks in the past, but its latest role as a carbon-fiber swaddled cyborg cranium just might take the cake. Using the equally forsaken MeeGo OS, a roboticist by the name of Sascha hacked his way into the phone's three-axis controller and other components in order to bring his Bioloid creation to life. The smartphone's video streaming and remote access functions may also give this bipedal mech a leg-up on the last N900 robo we admired -- but we'll need to see some video of it all in action before we make that call. Meanwhile, let's just hope that this unholy union of rejected parts doesn't become self-aware and turn on the company that cast it away.

SkyDrive app for Windows Phone gets 2.0 update, reduces free storage capacity

Microsoft has updated its SkyDrive cloud storage and sharing app for Windows Phone -- you know, the one that offers more free storage than a certain competitor. New features include a batch-select tool to make moving files around easier while on the go, the ability to directly manage folder permissions and the quick sharing of files with approved recipients in your People Hub. Version 2.0 is currently available for download in the Marketplace -- even for low-end Windows Phones.

In other news, Microsoft has revealed pricing for its just-launched Skydrive app on Windows desktops, setting you back $10, $25, or $50 a year for an additional 20GB, 50GB or 100GB. Scrapped in the process is the 25 gigs of free storage that Microsoft once offered to new users, now dropping that pro-bono capacity to just 7GBs, save for the lucky few that opted in before the company announced its new pricing structure.

Update: It's been confirmed on Microsoft's website that the upgrade from the new 7GB limit to the previous 25GB for existing users is a limited time loyalty offer, so be sure to manage your storage as soon as possible to avoid the new limits.

The AT&T HTC One X is now available to pre-order, and it seems the network may be preparing to show off demo units in store, as evidenced by the latest photos sent our way by an anonymous tipster. Besides that, there's not a whole lot to surprise regular readers here -- it's an HTC One X, on AT&T, with the carrier's branding proudly displayed atop the screen. It'll launch on May 6, and we're expecting it to be just as good as its international Tegra 3-flavored sibling.

Is corn syrup killing the honeybees? (+video)

A trio of recent studies faults a common family of corn pesticides for disorienting honeybees, potentially leading to colony collapse disorder. The German chemical company Bayer, which manufactures the pesticides, disagrees. ?

Since 2006, something awfully strange has been happening to North America's commercial beehives. Beekeepers are finding that many of the boxed hives ranged throughout their apiaries have been inexplicably abandoned by worker bees. These ghost-hives typically have ample stores of honey and pollen, and hold gestating colony broods, sometimes even a lone queen.

This phenomenon is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and two papers published recently in the journal Science say that it is correlated with the presence of a ubiquitous class of insecticide called neonicotinoids. A newer study published in the Bulletin of Insectology suggests that this insecticide is introduced into bee colonies through, strangely enough, high-fructose corn syrup.

The insecticide was developed by Bayer AG, the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant most recognized for its original brand of aspirin. Today, the $53 billion company has released a rebuttal to the suggested link between neonicotinoids and Colony Collapse Disorder.

The population of feral honeybees in the US has been steadily decreasing for the past half-century, and is now almost nonexistent. In the same timescale, commercial honeybees experienced a shallower decline in population. However, since 2006, they have started rapidly disappearing in North America and Europe. Many scientists agree that the confluence of factors that drove population decline before 2006 is still in effect, but that something probably changed in light of the new rash of colony collapses.

Identifying the causes of CCD is a complex proposition, but the disorder's symptoms and effects are quite simple. It usually occurs when worker bees first depart their hives to forage, in winter or early spring. Then they don't return. Their hives typically have an active queen, ample food, and a developing brood ? not exactly the home a bee would abandon under normal circumstances. Many scientists have since suggested that pesticides may disorient bees or affect their memory, making them unable to navigate home.

Chensheng Lu, an environmental scientist at Harvard and the lead author on the Bulletin of Insectology paper, was curious as to how the insecticide may be introduced into the colony, and decided to investigate high-fructose corn syrup, which for the past decade has been used by beekeepers to supplement hives that have been decanted of honey. Much of the US corn crop is treated with neonicotinoids, and so trace amounts of the insecticides can often be found in the sugary syrup.

Lu and colleagues designed an experiment that would expose hives to concentrations ranging from 20 to 400 parts per billion. Within 4 months, 15 of the 16 experimental hives had been emptied by what appeared to be CCD, according to the researchers.

As more studies are published on this subject, the link between neonicontinoids and CCD may become more apparent. In this case, Bayer AG could only be held indirectly accountable, as it is the beekeepers who are substituting the inexpensive syrup for bee honey, thereby introducing the pesticide.

Earlier today Bayer released a statement that criticized the Harvard study, asserting that the sample size was too small to be statistically significant and that the "authors ignored the scientific consensus that bee health is impaired by multiple factors, including inadequate diet, pests and parasites such as the varroa mite, microbial diseases, mismanaged colonies, and loss of genetic diversity."

These are not unreasonable criticisms. Though the study authors certainly didn't "ignore" a "scientific consensus" on the multiple factors that could cause CCD. They simply investigated one of them. Nonetheless, scientists are still puzzled by the many possible causes of the disorder. They're also concerned, and for good reason.

The common honeybee is widely recognized as the most important insect pollinator. They're extremely versatile, able to collect both nectar and pollen and to transport it. They are easily managed by beekeepers, and live year-round, which means they will service a wide variety of plants. They're also fecund; one simple colony can consist of one queen, a few hundred drones and roughly 80,000 workers. There is no realistic scenario in which we could operate our mass-scale farms without them.

Bayer's concerns about the studies are not all that surprising considering the company's financial interests. But if more research confirms that its neonicotinoids are afflicting the commercial honeybee population, then they are threatening an enterprise on which Bayer crucially depends: agriculture itself.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? Floyd "Creeky" Creekmore is one of the quieter acts in the circus, his larger-than-life clown shoes shuffling methodically as he works the crowd, igniting surprised giggles and slack-jawed wonder from children that look up to encounter Creekmore's wrinkled eyes smiling through thick makeup.

At 95 years old, the former Montana rancher recently dubbed the oldest performing clown in the world has fewer magic tricks up his oversized sleeves than he once did. He gave up juggling several years ago after a stroke, and has long since parked the home-made bicycle he once incorporated into his acts.

But when the Shrine Circus comes through Billings, where Creekmore lives with his 96-year-old wife, Betty, Creeky the Clown returns to life.

At home in his kitchen, while Betty dozes in the living room, Creekmore pulls on a multi-colored, striped jacket and dons a bright orange wig topped by a yellow hat. He glues on a rubber nose, carefully ties his shoes.

When his shaky right hand sends a line of make-up askew on one side of his face, Creekmore just makes the other side a little crooked, too.

"I'll stay back from the crowd so they don't notice," he says.

Others have laid claim to the title of world's oldest clown, including an 81-year-old member of the Moscow Circus, Oleg "The Sun Clown" Popov and Andy "Bumbo" Beyer of Santa Ana, Calif., who was widely publicized as the oldest until his retirement three years ago at the age of 91.

But turns it out that Creekmore had a 20-month advantage all along, clowning away in his low-key style in eastern Montana. He now carries the imprimatur of Guinness World Records, which declared him world's oldest performing clown in February after friends applied on his behalf.

Fellow performers and family members says Creekmore has started to slow down, yet gives no sign of ending his periodic performances.

"Even if his body is telling him no, his mind won't stop," said grandson Tom McCraw.

Back in his kitchen, Creeky is almost ready to go. He picks out a disappearing handkerchief and a gag-rope as props, offers a goodbye to Betty ? "Doesn't he look good?" she remarks from the dining room table ? and eases into his son's Volkswagen Beetle. A few minutes later he's mounting the steps into the crowded Shrine Auditorium.

Just inside the entrance, he's approached by gaggles of glow-stick waving, popcorn-spilling children. Creeky shakes hands, tries out his rope trick, throws out grins.

"Don't pinch the nose," he warns an over-eager boy sporting a Mohawk haircut.

Creeky stays on his floppy feet through the flashing lights of the tiger tamer's act, endures the roar of a daredevil motorcycle act accompanied by hard-thumping rock and roll.

When some jugglers take the stage Creeky ducks out to the lobby for a quick rest, then is back at his post in time to see a favorite performance, a dog act that includes a pair of long-jumping Afghans and a massive St. Bernard in a tight red dress.

During intermission Creeky is competing for the crowd's attention with elephant rides and a 7-foot-tall Chuck E. Cheese. His voice barely audible amid the din, Creeky manages to spark laughter with each brief interaction.

It's a routine Creekmore nailed down over eight decades, since his introduction to clowning in the 1930s.

When the Barnum and Bailey Circus passed through the Montana city of Great Falls and other youths sought odd jobs in exchange for tickets to the show, Creekmore says he sought out the clowns, looking for insights.

At 15, Creekmore had moved out of his family's house to work on a string of central Montana ranches while he put himself through high school.

His interest in clowning was known in his hometown of Coffee Creek. So when he was invited to perform in a local parade he pulled together a costume from old clothes and lipstick ? and found himself hooked on the laughter he drew.

After retiring from a lifetime of ranch work and homebuilding in 1981, he joined the Shriners, a spinoff of the Freemasons that holds circus performances to raise money for the group's hospitals. He's since been a mainstay of the Shrine circus. A wall in his house is covered with awards from clowning competitions across the country.

In Creekmore's family only grandson McCraw has followed in his footsteps. McCraw, 39, started clowning in 1982 at the invitation of his grandfather when he was 10 years old, after his older cousins balked at the offer. Creekmore and McCraw later would pair up to visit children in Shriners hospitals, the importance of which McCraw said became clear when he had a child with muscular dystrophy.

"Creeky understands that to make a child laugh, to make a child smile, that's what life's about," McCraw said.

As the performance at the Shrine auditorium nears an end, another clown escorts Creeky down a back stairway to avoid the exodus. When a woman holding a baby seeks his attention, Creeky slowly turns and heads back up the stairs to pose for one last photo.

He's clearly starting to tire and, citing weariness, later cancels his planned performance the next day.

But as he reaches the curb where his son will pick him up, Creeky smiles as he reflects on his decades as a clown.

"It's been a real good ride," he says. "I get along alright so I might as well keep it up."

Leopold Announces Plans for Adaptive Track at Freedom Field | Eye ...

County Executive John R. Leopold thanked the Governor, Comptroller and Treasurer for approving Program Open Space funds for the Lake Waterford Park Adaptive Recreation Track.

?The development of a state-of-the art facility for children with special needs has always been one of my top priorities and is a model for adaptive recreation,? County Executive Leopold said. ?This addition to the Adaptive Recreation Complex at Lake Waterford will provide additional opportunities for athletes to excel at their sport.?

The newly funded project consists of a 220-yard rubber surface track to complement the existing ?Freedom Field,? which was opened to the public in July of 2010. The State grant is for $438,000 towards a total project amount of $584,000. Construction is expected to begin by next spring.

An accessible playground is also part of the Adaptive Recreation Complex, which is designed for baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and track and field. County Executive Leopold has also supported individuals with disabilities through higher penalties for violating disability parking laws and events like Disability Awareness Day, which honors employers who hire individuals with disabilities.
