Bill and Giuliana Rancic Will Show Their Baby's Birth | Famecrawler

75686PCN Guilianna15 199x300 Giuliana Rancic: Baby Dukes Birth Will Be Televised

Bill and Giuliana Rancic.

Proud new parents are often eager to share everything with the world, from the official birth announcement to the video of baby?s first steps.

So it is with Giuliana and Bill Rancic. Ever since the birth of their son, Edward Duke, they?ve been sharing photos and talking to interviewers about the sheer joy of being parents after so many long and frustrating years.

Now they?re taking the sharing a step further. Giuliana tells the Chicago Sun-Times Sunday magazine Splash that they?ll be airing their home footage of Duke?s birth on the upcoming season of their reality show, Giuliana & Bill.

The couple had previously decided that they wanted the birth to stay personal. They told the Style Network not to send their cameras into the Denver delivery room when their gestational surrogate, Delphine, went into labor. But Giuliana and Bill did bring their own video camera to capture the miraculous moment.

And now that a month has passed, they?ve reconsidered their decision.

?This is our sixth season and people have followed our story for years,? Giuliana tells the magazine.

?To have people praying for you and supporting you and wanting the best for you and wanting you to have this baby so badly, and then to say, ?Thanks for all your prayers, thanks for your support, we?re not showing the baby.? That?s wrong.? So they gave their own footage to the producers.

But there?s lots more for Giuliana & Bill fans to see before the birth episode airs. The new season, which starts Tuesday, will also feature Giuliana?s baby shower, her coverage of the Olympics in London, the couple?s search for a larger house and their hunt for just the right nanny for little Duke.

The Rancic family has been spending time in Chicago while Bill supervises the opening of his new restaurant. Soon, they?ll be packing up again and traveling back to Los Angeles to settle into their new home.

What do you think? Are you glad Giuliana and Bill are sharing the birth video?

Technology designed for use by astronauts works to save trapped miners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A technology designed for use by astronauts in the hazardous environment of space has found a lifesaving use in another dangerous occupation, but this time on Earth, or rather under it: coal mining.

Paragon Space Development Corp. of Tucson, Ariz., is providing the air revitalization system it matured under a NASA Space Act Agreement to Mine Shield LLC of Lancaster, Ky., for use in its underground miner refuge chambers. These air-tight metal chambers are used by miners as lifesaving havens when trapped underground, providing air, water and food until rescued.

"This is a great example of NASA investment fostering entrepreneurial activity in other markets," said Phil McAlister, director of NASA's Commercial Spaceflight Development in Washington, D.C. "The technology was developed as part of an effort to stimulate the private sector to develop commercial space transportation concepts and enable capabilities for future commercial support of human spaceflight with U.S. taxpayer dollars and Paragon's private investment. The company then found another market for it, leading to the development of a new commercial product and service, which will help save the lives of American miners."

In 2010, NASA began to invest in the commercial sector's capability to support transport of crew to and from low Earth orbit. During this initiative through a Space Act Agreement, NASA invested approximately $1.5 million of American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 economic stimulus funds in Paragon to mature its air purifying system.

Astronaut survival in space depends on a continuous source of breathable air. Paragon improved its design, manufactured and tested an engineering development unit that controls carbon dioxide, humidity, trace contaminants, airborne particulates, air circulation and cooling. Key elements of this technology could play an important role in the life support systems for future deep space exploration missions.

"Our air revitalization system recycles the air by using a series of scrubbers, filters and catalysts that purify the air over and over again," said Taber MacCallum, chief executive officer of Paragon. "The fact that this system, which was developed for human space exploration, has other important applications here on Earth shows how NASA and space exploration energizes American innovation."

Paragon was approached by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration to see if the NASA-developed technology could be used to improve the safety and effectiveness of mine refuge chambers.

Are You Losing Ground In Affiliate Marketing? Make It Up With ...

Online marketing is helpful for companies in the promotion of services and products, and is used instead of, or in addition to, traditional marketing methods, such as television and print media. The tips presented below can be a big help if you?d like to make use of Internet marketing in your own business.

Put some banners on your header, make sure they do not look like a banner. Use banners that are links to click on to get to more content. Most people will not click banners when they see them, so this will entice them to.

You need to have good leads to get good sales. Real-time leads will unify both you and a potential customer during the moment in which this person is looking for product information. Contacting your customer as they express their need for your product gives you the best chance of selling them your product.

TIP! Make a plan for how you will market your webpage and the strategies you will use. A good way to advertise your page is to give something away, tell people about it in blogs, or put ads out at businesses.

Include your signature in all of your emails, regardless if they are business-related or not. It can also act as a ?cyber business card? of sorts. This is a great way to connect with people and seem more accessible, which will in turn boost revenue and traffic to your site.

Use popular websites to advertise your company online. Having your brand recognized can be a powerful way to increase your business success. If your page has traffic all day, the presence of your ad will be implanted in a customer?s mind.

There has to be something on your site that visitors can?t find anywhere else. Doing so will likely increase the traffic of people interested in the product. Once they have been driven to your site, they are more likely to browse around, improving your search result rank.

TIP! Services that provide email marketing are easily available and can assist you with internet marketing, but it?s always a good idea to try to learn the process yourself. It is simple to use auto responders, send bulk emails and build contact lists once your know what you?re doing.

Always stay on top of what your internet promotion competition is doing. It doesn?t matter what market you have, there is always competition.

Money is required to buy a quality domain. Chances are, you are not going to find a domain name that is the exact name of your company. You can get any domain name you want if you have over a thousand dollars to spend. You should definitely weigh the pros and cons of this investment.

If you are already using internet promotion, you know which of your products are top sellers. Next, try using these products to think of new products that might generate a similar profit. Advertising accessories for these popular items will likely further your sales. These products are virtually guaranteed to be profitable, and advertise themselves through the main product.

TIP! Make use of good quality graphics that showcase what you are selling on your website. Potential buyers will appreciate the fact that they can clearly see the products you are selling.

Check frequently for outdated information on your website. Old material is of little use in these fast paced times. So, new content is king to both casual visitors to your site and to the search engine algorithms, which determine your ranking in the listings. When readers encounter a well-maintained site with pertinent and current information, they find it encouraging.

You should take the time to look at how others respond to your content, promotions, and even your business as a whole. If you establish an event, promotion, or ambition online, look to how your visitors react on blogs and forums. Choose to incorporate future customers? advice when applicable and make people feel like their opinions are important and considered.

It can be easy to overspend on advertising. It is not wise to pay for a service that is not going to even help out your business. Consider spending money on banner and other forms of advertisement if you believe you will benefit from this investment.

TIP! Allow customers to rate and review your products, but be sure to screen those reviews for spam. Once a buyer has given feedback that illustrates the strong points and weaknesses of a product, other potential customers can make a more-informed purchasing decision.

Be sure to have customer reviews and testimonials included on your site. Oftentimes, people are interested in see what others buyers have to say about the product and enjoy seeing the experience others had. Comments from other consumers can make them feel comfortable with both your company and their purchase.

User reviews is one of the best marketing strategies to employ. Customer?s post their real experiences with your product and these can make new sales, at the same time they are increasing your presence on the Internet with more content.

Consider marketing your website as a forum or social gathering spot instead of just another business website. This should increase the traffic to your site as people are able to communicate with one another. That also allows your site to stay in the forefront of their minds. Give people graphics they can use on their websites to advertise their memberships; it?s free advertising.

TIP! Although you should feature current headlines, try to make yours stand out from the rest. You should make them engaging and interesting for people to appreciate.

Orders should include incentives for a limited time. You may offer free shipping to a limited number of shoppers, for instance, or you may give away gift-wrapping to those who make orders prior to a given date. Make sure that you highlight the end date of the offer to create a feeling of urgency.

As you can see, Web marketing has become an essential for any successful business. Web marketing can be an amazing promotional vehicle that is just as strong, or in some ways stronger, than more traditional advertising methods. You can see the benefits for yourself if you take a few of this articles suggestions and try them out with your business

TIP! Change your headlines and add relevant content often. Keep a record of how those changes affect the traffic generated on your site.

Egypt tourism takes a hit from prophet protests

(AP) ? One of the world's largest cruise ships, its foreign passengers primed for onshore spending, was supposed to dock in Egypt this month. The port call, however, was scrapped because of security concerns surrounding Mideast protests against a film made in the U.S. that denounces Islam's holiest figure.

Once again, Egyptian tourism, an engine of the national economy and a flagship of the regional industry, has taken a hit. It was another setback for a business that had plummeted in parts of the Middle East and North Africa last year during the uprisings known as the Arab Spring, then moved toward recovery this year.

"Small things become like mountains," Essam Zeid, an Egyptian tour guide, said of the fallout from unrest in Egypt since authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February 2011. But he also offered a (somewhat) positive metaphor: "We always say that Egypt gets sick but never dies. Recovery is always an option."

Egypt and other Arab nations undergoing turmoil rely heavily on the labor-intensive trade and see it as a priority key to economic growth and social stability.

Travel and tourism directly contribute a big chunk of gross domestic product to some of the countries that suffered economic fallout from last year's tumult, which came not long after the global financial crisis. Egypt, for example, generals 6.7 percent of GDP from tourism and Tunisia is around the same level with 6.6 percent, according to the London-based World Tourism and Travel Council. It is among industry groups that will assess the impact from the latest upheaval, though it is too early for a comprehensive estimate of losses.

In the multi-layered Middle East, a setback for tourism in one area can mean a windfall in another. During the Arab Spring, tourists, many of them Arabs, turned away from countries in crisis and traveled to more stable places like Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, said Sana Toukan, Middle East research manager for Euromonitor International, a market research group. The UAE also drew more Chinese visitors, according to Toukan.

The latest downturn followed demonstrations in Egypt against an online film that was produced by a U.S. citizen originally from Egypt and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad. They were part of a wider explosion of anger in Muslim countries. The unrest hit near the U.S. Embassy, far from the pyramids of Giza on Cairo's outskirts, and even farther from gated Red Sea resorts, cocoons for the beach-bound vacationer.

Yet the online or TV images of flames, barricades and whooping demonstrators were a killjoy for anyone planning a getaway, even though the protests have now largely subsided. Tour guides in Egypt say tourist bookings are mostly holding, but they worry about a drop-off early next year as people tend to plan several months ahead.

Tharwat Agami, head of the chamber of tourist agencies in Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings tombs in southern Egypt, reported up to one-quarter of tourist cancellations through October. His own company guided 17 American tourists last week, half of the group's expected number.

Royal Caribbean International took no chances. One of its vessels, Mariner of the Seas, can carry more than 3,000 passengers. It left Italy, on Sept. 15 ? with regional tension still boiling over the film ? and was to call at Alexandria on the northern Egypt Mediterranean coast three days later.

The company canceled the layover "in an abundance of caution," said Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications at Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

"Royal Caribbean International continues to closely monitor the situation in Egypt," Martinez wrote in an email Tuesday to The Associated Press. "At this time, Royal Caribbean has not changed the itinerary of any upcoming sailing that includes a port call to Egypt."

Cruise ships also stayed away during the turmoil that led to Mubarak's downfall. Usually, passengers board buses for a day's outing to Cairo, where the pyramids, the medieval citadel, the mummies of the Egyptian Museum and other treasures await. It's a windfall for guides, ticket vendors and souvenir shops.

Egyptian tourism revenues fell 30 percent to $9 billion in 2011, but the industry proved as resilient as it is vulnerable. It survived the killing of 62 people, mostly foreign tourists, by Islamic militants in a 1997 attack at Luxor that seemed aimed at weakening the government by stopping the flow of tourism revenue. The Sept. 11, 2001 attacks by al-Qaida pummeled tourism, as did 2005 bombings in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.

Fueled partly by oil income, Mideast tourism is more diverse and reliant on regional customers. Expatriates and tourists splurge in the glitzy city-state of Dubai in the Persian Gulf; religious tourism is big at Islamic sites in Saudi Arabia; Oman and Jordan are angling for a piece of the medical tourism market. The popular uprisings did not affect Turkey but diverted tourist traffic to the country, now rated sixth in the world in international tourist arrivals.

Tourism prospects are a moot point in Syria, which is embroiled in a civil war, and in still-chaotic Libya, where militias roam. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11 in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in an attack on the American consulate there.

In Tunisia, violence and looting around the U.S. Embassy during a protest against the anti-Islam film did no favors for a tourism campaign that had been titled, "All Dreams are Possible."

"It's not one picture when you look at the Middle East," said Sandra Carvao, Madrid-based communications coordinator at the World Tourism Organization, a U.N. agency. "It's a region that has suffered and has proven to bounce back in the past."

Indeed, the agency had deemed the Middle East to be the fastest growing tourism market in the world over the past decade, despite the Iraq war, the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah and other violence. While some Gulf airlines have gone bankrupt, Carvao compared the expansion of Emirates and Etihad Airways to the rate of growth of Asia's aviation leaders.

Amid upheaval and political transition in 2011, according to the agency, international tourist arrivals in the Middle East dropped seven percent to 55.7 million, and in North Africa by nine percent to 17 million. So far this year, the numbers have climbed by nearly one percent and 10.5 percent, respectively.

Gladys Haddad, a tour guide in Cairo, said she was pleased that Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, appealed to Italians to visit Egypt when he was in Rome at the height of tension over the anti-Islam film. She said early concerns that Egypt's Islamist-dominated government might scare off tourists by banning alcohol or mixed beaches have waned, at least for now.

"I don't think they're going to have like a magic stick to do things right away" to improve tourism, Zeid, the guide who is quick with a metaphor, said of Egypt's fledgling government. "We can't really evaluate their work right now. They have lots of other issues on their agenda."

One thing in their favor, immeasurably, is what lies in Egyptian sands. In its bid to revive tourism, the government this month reopened the Serapeum of Saqqara, a subterranean necropolis where bulls were believed to have been buried in giant sarcophagi. The site was closed for a decade for renovation.

One tourist who marveled at Egypt's heritage was Herodotus, the ancient Greek who wrote about Egyptian beliefs and customs, based on what he said he had observed.

According to a 19th century translation by a British scholar, he wrote: "Concerning Egypt itself, I shall extend my remarks to a great length, because there is no country that possesses so many wonders, nor any that has such a number of works which defy description."

Russian metals moguls settle RUSAL stake spat

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian billionaires Oleg Deripaska and Michael Cherney reached an 11th-hour settlement in a dispute over a billion dollar slice of aluminium giant RUSAL, shortly before they were due to give evidence in a drawn-out London court case.

The case, which had been expected to run well into 2013, was due to dwell on allegations of broken promises, criminality and mob rule while shining a light on the murky carve-up of lucrative smelters in the 'wild east' of post-Soviet Siberia.

"Mr. Deripaska announces that Mr. Cherney's litigation in London against him has been terminated," a spokesperson for Deripaska said in a brief statement. "Neither party will be making any further comment in relation to the litigation or matters raised therein."

Cherney's team released a nearly identical statement.

Cherney, born in Ukraine, raised in Uzbekistan, Jewish by creed and living in Israel since leaving Russia in 1994, alleged that metals mogul Deripaska reneged on a deal to buy him out of their joint aluminium business, RUSAL.

Well-connected Deripaska, who controls RUSAL and is a survivor of President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on oligarchs who once wielded great political power, denied having had any such business relationship with Cherney. He alleged he was the victim of a protection racket Cherney helped orchestrate - an accusation Cherney denied.

Cherney, who in 2008 won the right to bring his case against Deripaska in London's respected courts - the venue of choice for the warring Russian wealthy - was due to be cross-examined next Tuesday via video-link from Israel. An outstanding arrest warrant relating to a separate money laundering investigation prevents him from travelling to London.

Lawyers were intrigued at the last-minute deal.

"The experience in most of these cases is that they do go to trial because no one is willing to back down," said Philippa Charles, a litigation partner at law firm Mayer Brown.

"So it's interesting that the level of publicity has perhaps focused the minds of both parties on whether or not it is actually worth having their dirty linen washed in public."

THE POWER OF METAL

The Russian aluminium industry, like much of Russia's raw materials sector, came under the control of a few powerful oligarchs during the huge selloff of state assets that followed the collapse of communism and of the Soviet Union in 1991. The brutality of the business rivalry over aluminium smelters gave birth to the term 'aluminium wars'.

Cherney's case against Deripaska had overtones of a recent battle between Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, which in August helped ensure the concept of "krysha", or roof, is well understood in the English courts.

A "krysha", in Russian gangster parlance, can be either a figure who genuinely protects, in return for payment, the interests of a business in a sometimes brutal business world or it can refer to a racketeer extorting money by intimidation. The boundary between the two can, of course, be blurred.

The case, which began in July when both sides published opening statements and lawyers laid out the details of their arguments in front of Judge Andrew Smith, hinged in part on what was agreed in a London hotel 11 year ago.

Cherney and Deripaska agreed they met at the Lanesborough Hotel on a March morning in 2001, that they signed one document and that Deripaska handed Cherney $250 million (154.1 million pounds). Everything else, even exactly when they first met each other, was disputed.

Deripaska says he made the payment to terminate a krysha arrangement with Cherney, partly because his business was now powerful enough, and his security forces strong enough, to confront criminal gangs.

Cherney says he had orally agreed a 50/50 partnership with Deripaska in 1993, which lasted until March 2001. He alleges Deripaska then agreed at the Lanesborough meeting to pay him a preliminary $250 million for his aluminium interests held by Deripaska - and also agreed to buy him out of the remainder of his stake within a few years.

MOB RULE

RUSAL, the product of a slew of takeovers and mergers mainly in Siberia, where the hydro-electric power needed to fuel hungry smelters comes cheap, has emerged as Russia's only aluminium producer. Cherney alleged a 13.2 percent stake belongs to him.

Deripaska, a former physics student who started investing in aluminium assets in 1991 who has entertained top British politicians on his 70 million pound ($114 million) yacht, says he was forced into a "krysha" after being threatened by some of the country's most powerful criminal gangs in the mid-1990s.

Stories abound about such "protection" mobs attacking the wives and relatives of those who failed to do their bidding, launching fictitious criminal proceedings, violent takeovers of businesses or simply liquidating rivals and critics.

One gang at the centre of the court case was the feared Ismailovskaya mob, alleged to have been run by Anton Malevsky, a man Deripaska says was used by Cherney to extort money before the Afghan war veteran died in a parachuting accident in 2001.

Cherney, who has never been convicted of a crime, dismissed the claims against him as "scandalous".

Deripaska also faced allegations at proceedings in Israel, the United States and Russia that he was involved in bribery, threats and even murder as he built his fortune. In separate proceedings, Germany's Stuttgart Regional Court has also linked him to Ismailovskaya. He denied the accusations.

Netbook Vs Laptop - UK Business Forums

About every 2 weeks or so, I get this annoying User password screen crop up, and have to keep pressing this orange button to get back to the desktop or whatever application is open.

But the keyboard frustrates me as the keys are separated and kind of heavy pressing is required for response. My old laptop was perfect as the keys were sort of lighter, v responsive, but the fan died on me so upset about that

Need:

Good RAM,
nice responsive keyboard
enough USB ports

its for business use so it needs to be durable as in the past my laptops haven't lasted over 2 years.

Toyota builds assistive robot to help the disabled around the home

Toyota

Toyota has built the Human Support Robot, a 70 pound 'droid designed to help the elderly and less-able around the home. The tablet-and-voice-controlled unit can open your curtains, fetch items and even pick up after you, thanks to its single telescopic arm that stretches up to 2.5 feet. A tablet slot on top of its head lets you use the hardware as a telepresence device, although we're more interested in teaching it some attitude so we can live out our "sassy housekeeper" sitcom fantasies in peace.

Snedeker plays his best at right time, wins $11.4M

ATLANTA (AP) ? Brandt Snedeker doesn't claim to be the best player in the world, the best player on the PGA Tour or even the best overall player in the FedEx Cup playoffs. All he needed was the best round of his career at East Lake to become FedEx Cup champion, giving him the biggest paycheck in golf.

And he's not about to apologize for that.

"Life is all about timing," Snedeker said with a sneaky grin.

He proved to be the right man in the right place Sunday in the Tour Championship. On a tough day on a tree-lined course, Snedeker overcame an early double bogey in the water with four big birdies and closed with a 2-under 68, making him the only player in the final five groups to break par.

That gave him a three-shot win over Justin Rose and two trophies in one day ? the Tour Championship and its $1.44 million prize, and the FedEx Cup with its $10 million. That's more money than Snedeker had made in his career going into the 2012 season.

"You go out there and play that round of golf, with that kind of pressure on that tough of a golf course, and to go through the adversity I had to go through, hitting the ball in the water and making a double bogey early and fighting my way back ... that's what you work your whole life for," he said. "This is about as close as I get to speechless."

Snedeker was tied with Rose going into the last round, though he could not ignore the presence of Rory McIlroy, who was three shots behind, and Tiger Woods, who was four back. McIlroy (1), Woods (2) and Snedeker (5) were among the top five seeds in the FedEx Cup going into the final event, meaning any of them only had to win the Tour Championship to capture the FedEx Cup.

Never mind that McIlroy had won four times this year against the strongest fields, including a record eight-shot win in the PGA Championship and back-to-back wins in playoff events at Bethpage Black and the TPC Boston that make him the clear-cut No. 1 player in the world.

The FedEx Cup was designed to put everything up for grabs in the Tour Championship, with the better odds given to the higher seeds.

McIlroy, who had 11 consecutive rounds in the 60s going into Sunday at East Lake, knew that as well as anyone. This is one time the Boy Wonder couldn't deliver. He lost four shots in a four-hole stretch on the front nine ? including a tee shot in the water on the par-3 sixth for a double bogey ? and never recovered.

He closed with a 74 and tied for 10th.

"I'm a little disappointed, but at the same time, Brandt really deserves to win," McIlroy said. "He played the best golf out of anyone. He knew what he needed to do. He needed to come in here and win. He controlled his own destiny, just like I did. And he was able to come and do that. So because of that, he really deserves it."

Woods also faded early, missing the fairway with a 3-wood on the opening hole and making bogey. He also found the water on the sixth hole for double bogey, and Woods didn't make a birdie until the par-5 ninth. He ended with a birdie from tap-in range on the 18th for a 72 to tie for eighth.

"I just didn't have it this weekend," said Woods, trying to win the FedEx Cup for the third time in its six-year history.

Snedeker turned his fortunes around with a 40-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole, which was bound to roll some 6 feet by the hole until it crashed into the cup. As Rose kept close, Snedeker poured in an 18-foot birdie putt on the 13th. When Ryan Moore made two straight birdies to tie for the lead at the par-5 15th, Snedeker knocked his approach onto the green for a two-putt birdie.

The clincher came on the 17th, when Snedeker chipped in from the front of the green to take a four-shot lead into the final hole. He never looked at a leaderboard all day. He was unaware that Moore finished with three straight bogeys, and only figured he had a comfortable margin against Rose.

In his worst swing of the day, Snedeker hammered a hybrid into the grandstands on the 18th, leading to a meaningless bogey.

There were times when golf could have felt meaningless. Snedeker had to miss five tournaments this summer, including the U.S. Open, with a rib injury that might have cost him a chance at making the Ryder Cup team. U.S. captain Davis Love III picked him anyway because he wanted good putters.

If there were any questions about that pick, Snedeker answered them.

"He's looking pretty good, yeah," Woods said.

More than his own small injury, Snedeker endured a year in which his father had a liver transplant. More recently, the son of his swing coach suffered critical injuries in a car crash. Tucker Anderson, in a responsive coma, was transferred to an Atlanta hospital, and Snedeker went by to see him Sunday morning.

The teen couldn't speak, but the message came through.

"I asked him if he thought I was going to beat Rory McIlroy, and he gave me a wink," Snedeker said.

Equally impressive as his win was how Snedeker handled the notion of an $11.44 million payday ($1 million of the FedEx Cup bonus goes into his retirement fund). He called a sum that size "like winning the lottery," before explaining a little bit more about who he is and how he was raised.

His father always taught him not to buy anything he couldn't pay for, and Snedeker has followed the instruction. He has a house in Nashville, Tenn., that he said was "not grandiose." He still drives the SUV he bought after he made it to the PGA Tour six years ago.

"I'm not by any means a flashy guy," he said. "Of anybody that I know, I do not need $11 million. So there are going to be things we can do to really help people. So that's the way I look at it. This is unbelievable to be financially stable for the rest of my career. As long as I'm not an idiot, I should be fine, really. I really think we can make a difference and help a lot of people out in Nashville and Tennessee and the surrounding areas."

Next up is a tournament that doesn't pay a dime. Snedeker was headed to Chicago on Monday for his first Ryder Cup. A performance like this can only help.

"I'm not under any illusion of being calm next week," he said. "I know it's going to be a very pressure-packed week. But I am going to use today as a huge thing to fall back on next week. I played against the best in the world this week for 72 holes and I beat them."

At just the right time.

Steve Ballmer Suggests Microsoft Has No Backup Plan if Windows 8 Fails

Only time and sales figures will ultimately determine if Windows 8 is a success or not, and in the meantime, all we can do on the consumer side is speculate.?Microsoft, however, is in a position to do more. The Redmond software giant could, for example, come up with a Plan B in case Windows 8 and its radically redesigned interface doesn?t catch on with consumers. Interestingly, it doesn?t appear Microsoft is too worried about that scenario playing out.

In an interview with? The Seattle Times, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sort of dodged the question of what Microsoft?s plan will be if Windows 8 doesn?t take off the way the company hopes.

?You know, Windows 8 is going to do great,? Ballmer said.

Asked whether or not he had any doubts about that, Ballmer said, ?I?m not paid to have doubts,? before letting out a chuckle ?I don?t have any. It?s a fantastic product.?

That?s up for debate. In our?formal review?of Windows 8, we issued Microsoft?s touch-friendly OS a 7/10 verdict. It?s probably not as bad as many people fear, but there are certainly things we don?t like about Windows 8. By comparison,?we scored Windows 7 with a 9 verdict?and Kick Ass! award when we reviewed it three years ago.

Ballmer spoke on a number of other subjects, including what he thinks about having to compete with Google, which has been known to pluck top-level talent from other companies.

?I think Google is just another big company at this state. I?m not saying they?re bad. They?re a good competitor for talent but it?s not like they?re some small startup,? Ballmer said. ?It?s not like they have the charm of smallness or pre-IPO-ness with them.?

The stakes for luring talented programmers is higher than it ever has been before. Microsoft is now aggressively competing with Google in the mobile space (Windows Phone and Windows 8/RT versus Android), and that?s something that will intensify when Windows 8 ships on tablets.

Strikes spread to gold sector in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Strikes in South Africa have spread in the gold mining industry, inspired by an illegal and violent work stoppage that netted workers at a platinum mine as much as a 22 percent pay hike.

Miners at AngloGold Ashanti's Kopanang mine, which employs 5,000 people and produced about 4 percent of AngloGold Ashanti's total production in the first half of this year, started striking during the night shift on Thursday.

The walkout continued into Friday. Company spokesman Alan Fine said the company has not yet received demands from the strikers, or any communication from them on why they are striking. National Union of Mineworkers spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said that it is meeting with AngloGold miners who are seeking a pay raise and encouraging them to return to work. But miners are increasingly rejecting the union and are selecting their own representatives to press demands with mining companies.

In recent weeks South Africa's rabble-rousing politician Julius Malema has outspokenly encouraged the wildcat mining strikes. On Friday, his lawyer confirmed that the government has issued an arrest warrant for him.

"Yes, I have met with my client and we are busy engaging with the authorities over this," said lawyer Niqcui Glaktiou. "I do not have a copy of the warrant and I don't know what the charges are." She added that the arrest warrant had been expected by Malema.

Malema, who was expelled from the ruling African National Congress, has spoken to cheering miners and told them that they have been let down by President Jacob Zuma's government and the ANC.

The National Union of Mineworkers, or NUM, is also in talks with the nearly 15,000 miners for Gold Fields near Carletonville who entered their 12th day of strikes. Miners there have said they want a monthly salary of 12,500 rands ($1,500), as London-registered Lonmin PLC gave to its striking platinum miners this week, and new leadership. The miners also want NUM branch leaders to step down.

Sven Lunsche, spokesman for Gold Fields, said the salary demand is beyond the company's means and the union spokesman said local union leaders could not be simply made to step down.

"If they want to recall or remove them they must follow proper procedure, by having a vote of no confidence, or telling us the allegations and we will launch an investigation," Seshoka said.

Workers at several mines have complained that the NUM is not doing enough for them, of cozying up to management and being more interested in its business interests and politics than the shop-floor needs of its members.

The Lonmin deal came after weeks of violence and negotiations between the company, several unions and miners who did not have representation. "The outcome ... will have a negative impact, having workers say maybe we should negotiate for ourselves, because we can get the owners of the companies to work with us," Seshoka said.

Lunsche said that the gold mining industry deals only through collective bargaining and would not be able to meet the financial demands being placed on them by striking miners. He said that many of the miners' complaints lay with their NUM leadership.

"It's been a worrying trend in the industry, particularly since all of these issues have gone beyond the collective bargaining forum," he said. "They are happening outside what has been an established as an orderly forum."

Some Anglo American Platinum miners have also been on strike. Leaders from each shaft have been voted on to represent the workers instead of the union, said two of those leaders.

"We are no longer with the NUM because we saw that they are failing us," said Alathus Modrsane, who said he is one of 40 leaders.

Miners for the Lonmin PLC platinum mine returned to work Thursday after a nearly six-week strike. The spread of labor unrest has affected investor confidence in the country that produces 75 percent of world platinum and is the No. 4 chrome producer and the fifth-biggest gold producer. South Africa produces 7 percent of the world's production of gold, a significant decline from its production of 67 percent of the world's gold in 1970, said Ross Norman of brokerage firm Sharps Pixley. The price of gold Friday hit a peak of $1,787 an ounce Friday, but lowered to about $1,777 as the day progressed.

Also Friday, the country's Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said that South Africa's commission of inquiry into the killings during the Lonmin strike at Marikana will have the power to summon witnesses, to search and seize and to demand documentation from other investigations. Police killed 34 miners on Aug. 16 in Marikana, and another 12 were killed on other dates.

Public hearings will be held at the Marikana Hall starting Oct. 1, and transportation will be provided for families wanting to attend, he said.

When the Ballot Hits the Bone

110962097 President Obama at the Sept. 20 Univision forum.

Mitt Romney has found a way to change the subject from his disparaging remarks about 47 percent of Americans. He?s attacking President Obama for saying that Washington, D.C., can?t be changed ?from the inside.? Romney wants to focus the presidential election on Obama?s statement.

Be careful what you wish for.

Romney thinks Obama?s comment was a confession of incompetence. He says Obama ?threw in the white flag of surrender.? Obama?s slogan, according to Romney, has changed from ?Yes, we can? to ?No, I can?t.?

Really? Let?s look at what Obama said. At a forum on Hispanic concerns, aired on Univision last night, he concluded:

The fact that we haven?t been able to change the tone in Washington is disappointing. We know now that as soon as I came into office, you already had meetings among some of our Republican colleagues saying, ?How do we figure out how to beat the president?? And I think that I?ve learned some lessons over the last four years, and the most important lesson I?ve learned is that you can?t change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside. That?s how I got elected, and that?s how the big accomplishments like health care got done, was because we mobilized the American people to speak out.

That isn?t a surrender. It?s a rallying cry. It?s a plea for outsiders?voters?to join the fight. Obama is saying his nice-guy approach didn?t work. He?s saying Republicans will cooperate only if voters send them a message. And the next message opportunity is on Election Day.

Until now, Obama hasn?t talked this way. His stump speech has asked voters to ?stand with me? but hasn?t called for a partisan mandate. ?That changed last night. In the final minutes of the Univision forum, Obama was invited to deliver whatever pitch he wanted. Here?s what he chose to say:

One thing that I saw in 2008 is that when the American people come together and decide that they are going to fight for the values and ideals that made this country great, we can?t be stopped. ?? The work that we?ve done on education, on immigration, on housing, on putting people back to work, on making sure that small businesses have access to financing?those are all issues that are representative of what you care about, your values. But you?ve got to get out there, and you?ve got to make sure that you express that with your ballot. So I would urge you to vote, and I would ask you to vote for me and Democrats up and down the ticket.

Democrats up and down the ticket. I can?t remember the last time Obama said something like that to a national audience. Why now?

Because now he has the polls on his side. Look at the trend lines on the generic ballot question. This is the standard question that asks, ?If the election for U.S. Congress were held today, would you vote for the Democratic candidate or the Republican candidate in your district?? Since March, Republicans have generally led or matched Democrats on this question, except for a two-week period in June and July when Democrats held an average lead of one to two points. That pattern changed on Sept. 10, when Democrats opened a lead that ballooned to three points?their biggest advantage in the Realclearpolitics polling average since 2009. Some of this is the Democrats? convention bounce and has since faded. But the trend line shows no such bounce for the GOP after its convention.

Psychology can explain and improve bad classroom behavior

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A new monograph published by the British Journal of Educational Psychology published September 21, 2012 brings together evidence from psychological research to help readers understand the causes of anti-social behaviour and what can be done to curb it.

Psychology and Antisocial Behaviour in School looks at the evidence from psychology for understanding troublesome behaviour in schools, dealing with behaviour in general, specific types of behaviour such as bullying, developmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD, and with different explanations for social emotional and behavioural difficulties such as social identity, information processing and social competence.

The emphasis is on empirically based psychological theory and research evidence and its relation to interventions in school. Findings from data gathered from a range of countries including Brazil, China, North America, Spain and the UK are reported.

Professor Pam Maras from the University of Greenwich, one of the editors of the monograph, says: "Young people's behaviour in and out of school currently receives a great deal of academic, media, and government attention, with many commentators expressing concern about the 'state of youth'. However, whilst antisocial behaviour in schools is a topic of major international concern, there is a surprising dearth of work on the psychological explanations for its occurrence, or on interventions founded on such explanations. This monograph is intended to address that deficit."

Sudden cardiac death is associated with a thin placenta at birth, researchers find

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Researchers studying the origins of sudden cardiac death have found that in both men and women a thin placenta at birth was associated with sudden cardiac death. A thin placenta may result in a reduced flow of nutrients from the mother to the fetus. The authors suggest that sudden cardiac death may be initiated by impaired development of the autonomic nervous system in the womb, as a result of fetal malnutrition.

The new study, published today in the International Journal of Epidemiology, also found that sudden death was associated independently with poor educational attainment. However, sudden cardiac death was not associated with maternal body size, fetal size at birth, or the length of gestation.

Professor David Barker and colleagues examined sudden death within the Helsinki Birth Cohort, which consists of 6075 men and 6370 women who were born in the city during 1934-1944 and attended child welfare clinics. Detailed information was recorded on the birth records of the group including the placental weight and the length and breadth of the placental surface as well as the child's weight, head circumference, and length.

Professor Barker, of the University of Southampton, comments that 'There is currently a growing body of research that shows that coronary heart disease is associated with alterations in prenatal growth and this has led to the hypothesis that coronary heart disease originates in the womb as a consequence of fetal malnutrition. In research recently carried out by myself and colleagues, we found that coronary heart disease among men was associated with altered shape and size of the placenta.'

'Our new research published today continues the investigation of the relationship between cardiac death and development within the womb. Our new findings suggest that sudden death may be initiated by the impaired development of the autonomic nervous system in the womb, due to placental thinness. A thin placenta may result in fetal malnutrition, due to a shallow invasion of the spiral arteries in the placenta which provide nutrients and blood to the baby. There is evidence that people who experience fetal malnutrition and who are small at birth have an increased sympopathoadrenal response to acute stress, which is known to be linked to death from cardiac arrest.'

Among women, sudden death was associated with a large placental area in comparison to the baby's weight. Placenta expansion in sheep is well documented and the findings in this study suggest that the placenta attempted to compensate for a thin surface by expanding the area of the surface. Professor Barker notes that 'there is evidence that compensatory placental expansion occurs in human and that this expansion may be beneficial in some circumstances. However, if the compensation is inadequate and the fetus continues to be under nourished then the need to share its nutrients with an enlarged placenta may become a metabolic burden and the quality of fetal development may be harmed. We believe that the female foetuses in our study compensated for placental thinness by expanding the placental surface.

Professor Barker and his team also found that sudden cardiac death was strongly associated with low socio-economic status and with low education attainment. He suggests that 'poor educational results may be due to a poor cognitive ability or other issues such as the inability to concentrate or maintain attention. We suggest that the association we have found between sudden death and poor educational attainment results from impaired prenatal development of the autonomic nervous system. These findings build upon a body of research that has consistently reported associations between sudden cardiac death and low socio-economic status.'

In the study, a total of one hundred and eighty-seven men (2.7%) and forty seven women (0.7%) suffered from sudden unexplained cardiac death outside of the hospital. The rate of sudden cardiac death among men and women increased with placental thinness, with a hazard ratio of 1.47. The authors restricted their analysis to deaths that occurred outside of hospital and were certified as coronary heart disease, with men and women who had never been admitted to hospital with coronary heart disease.

Professor Barker and his team do acknowledge that there are some limitations to the study. The placental measurements were made during routing obstetric practice 70 years ago and the quality of these measurements was not routinely checked and neither were other clinical measurements, such as blood pressure. The mean placental weight in this study was also more than the median recorded in a recent series of deliveries in Europe.
