Public speaking: acrimony, royalty, charity, Spinetti, simplicity ...

Speaking after an acrimonious meeting!

I had been a public speaker for almost a decade before I encountered a group having a really heated business meeting just before I was due to speak to them. It was a men's luncheon club and it took me by surprise. That evening I had another booking, this time for a women's institute, and their discussions also turned out to be very argumentative!

In both cases my talks to them afterwards went well, perhaps because they offered some light relief, but it was certainly an interesting day. The hundreds of gigs since then have been at groups where the vast majority of members have appeared to get on well with each other and I wasn't expecting my first talk in June to be any different, especially as I had spoken to this particular group twice before many years earlier and on both occasions I had really enjoyed the humour at their business meetings.

Back then they had nearly two hundred attending. The numbers have dropped over the years but there were still around 90 present that morning. The business meeting started and there was plenty of humour flying around once again until they started discussing a change in the group's name and membership criteria in a bid to prevent their numbers dropping further. This led to a number of objections from the floor and the sort of heated disagreements that I had not seen since that day in 2005. I was sitting listening to this and thinking 'I have to follow this soon and make them laugh'. My talk was The Power of Humour in Everyday Life and its credibility was certainly going to be tested! Actually, I was confident but it certainly wasn't an ideal warm-up for me!

But I needn't have worried. Large organisations often have reports from the smaller groups within them (theatre trips, bowling, etc) and the next speaker was a gentleman from their walks section. I wondered if his report would seem trivial to everybody following the row about the changes to their constitution but with his laid-back style and some gentle humour he quickly got everyone laughing. I was very impressed.

I then delivered my talk and it went brilliantly. There was a part where I had planned to include a story about the last time I spoke there and this did involve mentioning the higher audience numbers back then. I decided to press on with it ?but dealing with that detail in as few words as possible, certainly without referring back to the content of their meeting, and the anecdote itself got a big laugh.?

I received this testimonial after my talk:

"Thanks for your talk on 1st June. Your humour was very well received".

Public Speaking Tip #485:?You may find?yourself as a guest speaker at a meeting that turns out to be acrimonious. You are not a member of their organisation and the audience will sympathise with the situation you find yourself in. Take their minds off their earlier arguments with a decent presentation and they will certainly thank you for it.

?The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert

When I watched the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert on TV I thought the comedians who performed there had a near-impossible task. The performers, who ranged from the brilliant Lee Mack to others who, as far as I was concerned, fell into the categories of tolerable, OK-but-fast-becoming-overexposed and never-could-stand-them, were delivering comedy to a huge audience that was mostly there for the music, stretching out for a massive distance in front of them and in the open air! They had to perform very short pieces with no time to build, and with the added pressure of appearing on live TV with phenomenal worldwide viewing figures. In the circumstances I think they did very well. I later read that they had all been supporting each other backstage, offering advice on material, etc, which must have taken some of them back to their earliest days starting out in comedy clubs.

As far as the musical acts were concerned, as a speaker who is constantly blogging about tailoring content, it was interesting for me to see who chose to perform material that was actually appropriate. I was rather baffled by the stabbing theme with Mack The Knife and Delilah and by the young singer-songwriter who thought a song about a girl with a drug habit was the most fitting! On the other hand, Shirley Bassey's Diamonds Are Forever was the perfect choice and Stevie Wonder's rewriting of some his lyrics to be about the occasion was a breath of fresh air.

Public Speaking Tip #486: Just as tailored material makes a big impact, totally inappropriate content can stand out like a sore thumb!

One other thing about the singers. In July 2008 I blogged about attending the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards and about the terrific performance there by a then-unsigned new singer-songwriter simply called Jessie. Four years later, it was interesting to see her performing at this event, her name now one letter longer, her audience about one billion bigger!

Spirit of Wyke Women's Institute, Dorset

My next booking was to speak on The Power of Humour in Everyday Life to the?Spirit of Wyke WI?in Weymouth. In recent years, a huge number of 'new generation' WIs (or WI-lites as they are sometimes known) have started up, greatly boosting the organisation's national membership and replacing the many institutes that have closed down or been forced to merge. They tend to have a lower average age than more traditional WIs and, it must be said, have in some cases attracted negative publicity due to their rather tacky talks and theme nights and I have been rather wary of them overall but the ladies of Wyke were a lovely group to visit and the only real difference I noticed was that they are slightly less formal and meet in a pub, the Smugglers, rather than at a hall.

Before my talk they heard from speakers representing?Julia's House, the Dorset Children's Hospice, and watched a moving video presented by Martin Clunes, one of a large number of Dorset-based celebrities who support it.

Speaking after this was less of a challenge than speaking after the acrimonious meeting at my previous talk that month. The main concern was to avoid any material that might seem inappropriate so a quick review of my content was called for.

Public Speaking Tip #487: A speaker sometimes has to follow a sad announcement or charity appeal. Sticking to your prepared material - especially humour - can lift the mood but do check that there is no content which could come across as an insensitive gaffe.

The talk went very well. My thanks for the transport from the station and this testimonial:

"Just to say thank you very much for a delightful and funny evening, it was welcome after the sad video we had just seen. We didn't organise it that way but as it turned out it was good to have you follow on. Perhaps we will meet again at a future meeting, I've had good feedback from our members".

?

Shrewton Women's Institute, Wiltshire

Two nights later I had another WI talk from a recommendation, this time on Patrick 'Call My Bluff' Campbell for?Shrewton WI?in Wiltshire. They meet at the Methodist Hall and were a great audience, picking up on all the nuances in the humour.

There have some terr sificpeakers among their members, including a lady in her nineties who has given nearly 1,000 talks and, as the meeting followed the Jubilee celbrations, another lady who gave a funny impromptu talk about meeting the Queen on two separate occasions.

My thanks to Jo for the transport from Salisbury station and back again.

Test Valley Retired Staff Association, Romsey

When a group only has 4 meetings a year - and only 2 of those feature speakers - you feel fortunate to be booked by them, especially when they turn out to be a great audience. This was certainly the case when I spoke to the Test Valley Retired Staff Association at the Crosfield Hall in Romsey about My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer and I really must thank them for the buffet afterwards, the lift to the station and one of the most, er, unusual raffle prizes I have ever won at a talk!

The passing of a great raconteur

I was saddened to learn of the death of one of Britain's greatest raconteurs, Victor Spinetti. My partner Val and I were lucky enough to catch his one man show at the?Nuffield Theatre in Southampton in 2001.

I remember the energy of the performance he gave in a theatre maybe only half-full on that Sunday evening.

I remember how he conjured up the images of the people he had met, for example, Salvador Dali. He drew an imaginary moustache extending several inches above either side of his upper lip and we could picture it there for the rest of the anecdote.

And I particularly remember how, when he came out on stage, he had a big stack of showbusiness biographies and he mentioned how he was a footnote in them because of his associations with stars like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor and, of course, the Beatles. Later in the show, he poured himself a drink and managed to spill it over the books. He gave a mock cry of anguish 'Oh no, the books!', a stage hand came on and wiped up, he asked for a round of applause for him and then, with total professionalism, continued as if nothing had happened.

Public Speaking Tip #488: If something goes amusingly wrong during a presentation, have a bit of fun with it - and then get back down to business.

He was in demand for his storytelling right until the end of his life, in fact, on the day that his death was announced, he could be heard on a BBC Radio 2 documentary reminiscing about London's clubland.

His obituary appeared in all the broadsheets. Here is the one from the Daily Telegraph.

Overton U3A, Hampshire

I had a double booking the next day, first of all to speak on My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer for?Overton U3A?in St Mary's Hall. I got a great response and I was hugely grateful to their Speaker Co-ordinator Lesley for running me all the way back to Basingstoke which made it so much easier to get to my next booking in good time.?

She also sent me this lovely email:

"We have had a lot of positive feedback on your talk today!?It was lovely to meet you and hear about your life in comedy?writing. I have been smiling all day and spent ages telling my?husband all about you".

Woodley and Crampmoor Friendship Club, Hampshire

I was then met at Romsey station and driven to?Woodley Village Hall?ready to speak to ?Woodley and Crampmoor Friendship Club on the same topic. I met the lady who formed this club 25 years ago and she rightly proud that it is still going strong. An enjoyable afternoon. My thanks for the transport.

Clive James quote

Suzanne Moore in the Mail on Sunday on 24 June drew attention to a quote from Clive James, who said of Addenbrooke's Hospital: "It may not be as beautiful, perhaps, as the Taj Mahal, but it can save a life. It has been quietly busy saving mine". She wrote; "Yes, it's his brilliance in being able to say so much, so simply, that means we don't want him to go quiet yet".

Saying a great deal in very few words can be very effective on paper but it can also make a great impact in a speech. I can remember speaking at a lunch in Dorset in 1997. This was just a few weeks after the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 and the subject came up in conversation after my talk. Earl Spencer's eulogy had been the headline-grabber but one of the members of the club told me that he had been so struck by the very short poem by Henry Van Dyke, 'For Katrina's Sun Dial', read by the Princess's sister Lady Jane Fellowes, that he had immediately felt moved to write it down.

Public Speaking Tip #489: Public speaking may often seem rather wordy compared to everyday conversation but sometimes a short, simple paragraph can be remarkably effective.

Check out Google Play recommended apps

Scouring the Google Play Store for apps isn't always easy. When looking for an app you'll probably know the category it falls into, and you might know the name of something that works similarly to what you're looking for. Unfortunately, it's still a lot of work to sort through each entry until you find the perfect one.

You could look at app reviews online, or check star ratings in the Play Store, or you could try looking at Recommended For You.

Just open the Google Play Store and tap on Apps, then tap on the banner that says Recommended For You. This feature will help you find apps that are +1'd by your friends on Google+, popular based on geographic location, or similar to other apps you're already using. In fact, Recommended For You may seem familiar if you've used the Google Play Store on the Web, since it's been live there for the past month.

When you see an app you aren't interested in, you can tap on the small circle with the line through it on the right-hand side of the list. This will prevent it from showing up in the list again.

There are a few features the Google Play Store is still missing. For instance, you can't clean out apps from your list that you've used in the past, purchased apps do not display separately, and there's no option to create a wish list.

Do you find it strange that Google implemented this recommended app feature before any others? What would you like to see as a new feature in the Google Play Store?

Youngsters hit the big leagues - ClickThePaper.com

Jefferson Park Director Colton Green has been involved with youth athletics for a number of years, and has had the opportunity to see little league football flourish into a mega sport that youngsters have so much passion for.

Similarly to the National Football League, little league football has become more competitive, and Green, who is also the commissioner of the North Georgia Youth Football Association, says that sports had catapulted past what used to be America?s favorite sport.

?The game has changed tremendously in the last five years, much less the last 25 years. It has always been competitive to a degree but football at the recreational level in the State of Georgia [it] is viewed as a ?feeder? for each park?s high school,? said Green. ?If you look at the NGYFA, it is set up on the GHSA model where every park has clear district lines and all players are held accountable to participate where they live or attend school.?

?The level of play has climbed considerably in the last five years. The X?s and O?x change as the game does on a national level, however, the sport has grown to a nearly a five-month season and many parks offer flag versions in the spring. It has undoubtedly leaped baseball in terms of being America?s pastime,? said Green.

Not only have changes been made on the field, but the level of education amongst the coaches has grown tremendously. Programs have been put in place in order to help instructors teach the game in a way that is more safe and effective.

?The NFL has made tremendous strides in investing in the next generation of athletes and coaches. Their arm is USA Football. [You can visit usafootball.com for more information],? said Green.

One common concern among all sports is injuries, but luckily, the athletes at this age are not undergoing traumatic wounds that we see on the high school, collegiate or professional level.

?The injuries that occur at this level are the freak accident. They may land awkward on their arm, but it?s very rare that a concussion occurs,? said Green.

Some of the world?s most greatest athletes have been training in their respective sport since they were kids, and have years of experience and talent that can only come with a lot of hard work and dedication.

Football is a sport that teaches athletes to be prepared for lessons on and off the field, and can have a very positive effect if taught early on.

?The benefits of jumping into football early far outweigh any potential attrition associated with early participation. While most recreational sports aren?t ?lifetime sports? (the way that tennis, golf and swimming are), they still do a tremendous job of acclimating kids socially and instilling many of the values that they must learn before reaching adulthood. Some of those values are perseverance, teamwork and the fact that hard work will not hurt you,? said Green.

?Football is the ultimate team sport in that it takes 11 players to accomplish the goal. In every other sport, a dominant athlete can overcome the weakness of others. In football, a dominant athlete still needs his teammates. The social affiliation of football is powerful?game jerseys on Fridays?pushing yourself to the brink with a group of other boys and knowing that you can count on each other,? said Green.

Just like Jackson County Comprehensive and Jefferson High School, the Jefferson Recreation League has developed a few rivalries, and the war between the two is always a must see matchup.

?When they get to 10, 11 and 12 years old they begin to understand the actual dynamics of a rivalry. This year?s 12U group is focused on Union and Chestatee. This year?s 11U group is focused on Rabun. This year?s 10U group is focused on Jackson,? said Green.

?Any consistently strong park or school always attracts rivals because people enjoy playing well ran and competitive teams. Some of our rivals are Commerce, Jackson County, Dawson County, Union County and Rabun County. I may not speak for everyone but a loss to any of those other than Jackson is tough. A loss to Jackson is unlike anything else,? said Green.

The Jefferson leagues will compete in eight games each this season. Check out jeffersonrec.com for information including coaches, schedules and more.

Chronic stress linked to high risk of stroke

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors and type A personality traits, is linked to a high risk of stroke, finds research published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Chronic stress, manifested as physical and/or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than 6 months has been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.

The research team base their findings on150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit, and 300 randomly selected healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.

Levels of chronic stress were assessed using the combined quantitative scores of four validated scales, looking at major life events; symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; general wellbeing; and behaviour patterns indicative of type A personality (ERCTA scale).

Type A behaviours include hostility, aggression, impatience and a quick temper. A score of 24 or higher on the ERCTA scale is considered to be indicative of a type A personality.

Participants were also assessed for known biological risk factors for stroke, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of heart rhythm abnormalities, and daytime sleepiness.

And they were quizzed on their lifestyle, including their caffeine, alcohol and energy drink intake, as well as whether they smoked, had a partner, and a job.

The results showed that several factors were independently associated with a heightened risk of stroke.

Compared with the healthy comparison group, the risk of a stroke was almost four times higher among those who had experienced a major life event in the previous year.

A high score on the ERCTA scale more than doubled stroke risk, as did a current or previous history of smoking, and intake of two or more energy drinks a day.

And those with heart rhythm disturbances were more than three times as likely to have a stroke while those with a high daytime sleepiness score almost tripled their risk. And being a man boosted the risk nine-fold.

But when all the factors were assessed together, the risk of a stroke was associated with a stressful life and type A behaviours. And this held true, irrespective of other risk factors, including gender and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Self Help Advice That Can Help You Turn Your Life Around

Personal development is an important part of being the best that you can be. These may be efforts to change your lifestyle and improve your health, or perhaps an effort to improve the way you handle money. Striving to improve yourself is important, no matter how you go about it. Personal development is a job that?s never finished, because there are always things you can improve. By developing and maintaining good habits you can have a healthier and happier life.

You cannot take care of other people unless you take care of yourself. Take time for rest and relaxation, whether your health is good or poor.

The most important person to please is yourself; your self-esteem and happiness should come before anyone else?s opinion or desire. You are responsible for your own personal happiness, but this shouldn?t be at the expense of other people?s feelings. Develop your life around things that you value and that make you happy.

A critical step of personal development is the realization and acceptance of your insignificance. You need to know that in the grand scheme of things, your problems are very insignificant. Once you adopt this mindset, you will be more open-minded and receptive to new knowledge, which will lead to self-improvement.

Take the time to read what has helped others to be who they want to be. Pursuing self-fulfillment can benefit all areas of your life, including your abilities as an employee, a partner and as a person. Find out how others have accomplished this. Knowing what lessons have already been learned will positively affect your personal development.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any personal development goals you have

Small family size increases wealth of descendants but reduces evolutionary success

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have taken a step closer to solving one of life's mysteries -- why family size generally falls as societies become richer.

Evolutionary biologists have long puzzled over this because natural selection is expected to have selected for organisms that try to maximise their reproduction. But in industrialised societies around the world, increasing wealth coincides with people deliberately limiting their family size -- the so-called 'demographic transition'.

In a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Centre for Health Equity Studies (Stockholm University/Karolinska Institutet) and UCL (University College London) reject a popular theory put forward to explain the phenomenon. This 'adaptive' hypothesis proposes that low fertility may boost evolutionary success in the long term by increasing offspring wealth, which in turn eventually increases the number of long-term descendants because richer offspring end up having more children.

The researchers found that having a small number of children increased the economic success and social position of descendants across up to four generations, but reduced the total number of long-term descendants. They conclude that the decision to limit family size can be understood as a strategic choice to improve the socioeconomic success of children and grandchildren in modern societies, but this socioeconomic benefit does not necessarily translate into an evolutionary benefit.

The study indicates a conflict in modern societies between behaviours promoting social and economic benefits versus biological success. This contrasts with traditional populations in the developing world, where behaviours that promote wealth and social status usually lead individuals to leave behind more genetic descendants.

The researchers tested these hypotheses using data from the Uppsala Multigenerational Birth Cohort Study, which tracks 14,000 people born in Sweden in the early 1900s and all their descendants to the present day.

They measured the socioeconomic success of each generation by looking at their school marks, at whether they went to university and at their household income across adulthood. Reproductive success was assessed by survival to adulthood, marriage before age 40 (a proxy for 'mating success') and fertility (number of offspring up to 2009).

Among both male and female children in the original cohort, smaller family size and higher parental socioeconomic position were both associated with substantially higher school marks, university entrance and income. These effects were particularly large when low fertility and high socioeconomic status coincided, with the benefits of small family size being particularly marked in wealthier groups. Moreover, these advantages were in turn passed on to the grandchild and great-grandchild generations.

But contrary to the adaptive hypothesis, small family size and high parental wealth either did not affect reproductive success beyond the first generation of offspring or if anything showed a negative effect in subsequent generations.

Lead author Dr Anna Goodman, Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "Under natural selection, you would expect organisms to use their resources to produce more genetic descendants, and so increase their Darwinian fitness. The demographic transition is a puzzle because at first sight it doesn't look like people are doing this. One adaptive explanation for the puzzle is that there exists a quantity-quality trade-off, such that having more children leads to those children being less able to reproduce in turn -- i.e. higher 'quantity' leads to lower biological 'quality'. However our study found this quantity-quality trade off only applied to descendants' socioeconomic success, not their reproductive success."

Co-author Dr David Lawson, from the Department of Anthropology at UCL, said: "One of our most interesting findings is that being from an initially wealthy household makes the benefits of small family size even bigger. Poorer households in contrast have relatively little to gain by limiting fertility, perhaps because the success of their children is more determined by broader societal factors, rather than investment and inheritance from parents, which is in short supply. This observation suggests a certain economic rationality to fertility patterns in the modern world, since fertility rates often drop first and most substantially in the wealthier sections of society when populations undergo demographic transition."

Professor Ilona Koupil, from the Centre for Health Equity Studies (Stockholm University/Karolinska Institutet) said: "It is important to note the equity implications of these findings. First, this research indicates that differences in family size may have lasting consequences on social inequalities. Second, this research provides evidence for the fact that people's educational levels and wealth not only affect schoolmarks and income in their children but also in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From a broader social policy perspective, our findings show that even in a country like Sweden with relatively low levels of inequality, we need policies that seek to equalise children's opportunities across families."

Why Evangelicals Are Supporting Romney

Does evangelical support for Mitt Romney require them evangelicals elevate political partisanship over theological integrity? ?Does this show that evangelicals are willing to compromise their core theological beliefs in service to their political agenda?

I don?t think so ? but some have suggested it does. ?As the Republican national convention is underway, it?s worth revisiting this issue:

Jonathan Merritt wrote back in early June:

What?s surprising in 2012 is the relative lack of anxiety on the other [non-Mormon] side, among evangelicals who for years considered Mormonism a ?cult? that was to be feared, not embraced.

In fact, the relative ambivalence among prominent evangelicals about this new ?Mormon moment? ? and the fact that Romney?s campaign could mainstream Mormonism right into the Oval Office ? could radically shift the dynamics on America?s political and religious landscape.

My friend and Patheos blogger Scot McKnight?said that Merritt ?nails it.? ?He goes on: ?the evangelical voice has grown strangely silent on Romney?s Mormon faith, and it is for one reason: politics too often matters more.?

I disagree. ?Conservative evangelicals (progressive evangelicals are another matter, of course) are supporting Romney because they?re showing a measure of political maturity.

First of all, evangelicals like myself who supported Romney throughout the primary know that other evangelicals were hardly holding their fire when it comes to Mitt?s Mormonism. ?I can?t tell you how many emails and messages I received informing me that Mormonism is a cult and that supporting Romney for the GOP candidacy was doing the devil?s work. ?Robert Jeffress is commonly cited as the voice of the evangelical extreme on this issue,?but while I stringently disagreed with labeling Mormonism a ?cult,? what Jeffress articulated at the Values Voters Summit in 2011 was a reasonable position: Given two equally qualified conservatives candidates, one Mormon and the other evangelical, he would prefer an evangelical. ?But Jeffress made clear even then that, were Romney to win the nomination, he would have Jeffress? full support over against Barack Obama.

Let?s not forget that some Christian conservatives were so concerned by what looked like the increasingly likely prospect of a Romney presidency that they rallied in a Texas conclave in order to come to a consensus on an alternative to support. ?While Romney?s representatives were invited, the conclave was a microcosm of the primary, where social conservatives lurched from one bad candidate to another, in search of a Not-Mitt to support.

Once he won the primary, however, was it hypocritical of conservative evangelicals then to support Romney? ?Are they showing that they care more about the election of a conservative than the salvation of souls?

Of course not. ?There?s no compelling reason to believe that Mitt?s election would lead more people to convert to Mormonism. ?George W. Bush did not make Methodism more popular, and Barack Obama has not made the United Church of Christ more popular. ?There?s no evidence that John F. Kennedy swelled the ranks of the Mormon church, and no one seemed terribly concerned that Joseph Lieberman as Vice President would lead more people to become Jewish.

Granted, you might say, but Mormonism is on the fringe in a way that Methodism and Catholicism are/were not. ?This would ?mainstream? Mormonism, and thus would lead more people to take Mormonism seriously as a religious option. ?To which I say: So what? ?Let them learn about Mormonism and make a decision. ?I?m not afraid of people learning more about Mormonism and its distinctives from historic Christianity. ?And if Americans learn that Mormons are by and large ordinary and honorable people, that?s a good thing, in my book. ?Besides, a Mitt Romney presidency is just as likely to turn people off from Mormonism as it is to turn them on.

Perhaps evangelicals are supporting Romney because they understand that they?re voting for a President and not a Pontiff. ?Perhaps they?re supporting Mitt for the Presidency because, you know, they actually think he?d be a better President than Romney. ?Seems perfectly reasonable to me. ?While I would be uncomfortable with a satanist in the White House because I do fear that his fundamental values and beliefs would lead him to make decisions I would regard as morally objectionable, I have no reason to believe that the distinctive Mormon christology would lead Romney to make the wrong executive decisions.

Evangelicals are supporting Romney because they?re grownups. ?Many wanted someone else to win the primary, but evangelicals are not merely mashing their sour grapes. ?They?re supporting the man who is, by a hundred miles, a far better man for the White House than Barack Obama. ?We recognize the importance of evicting Obama from the White House; we understand they we?re not endorsing a theological but electing an executive; and we?re prioritizing issues like protecting the unborn and rebuilding a flourishing economy and culture over having someone in the White House who thinks about the Trinity in the same way we do.

That?s not hypocrisy. ?It?s maturity.

Romney?s speeches at places like Liberty University have made a difference, as Romney has begun to project the kind of full-orbed vision of American renewal, from its moral and cultural roots to its families and communities and businesses and economy, that conservative evangelicals are eager to support. ?Obama?s decisions and statements with regard to the HHS mandate and same-sex marriage have only strengthened evangelical support for Romney as well.

In the last analysis, evangelicals find themselves facing in this election just as they have for two generations this inexorable logic: (a) Abortion is the supreme moral issue of our time. ?(b) The Democratic Party is unequivocally the party of abortion. ?(c) Electing a Democrat (even a pro-life one, which Obama is not) is strengthening the party of abortion and prolonging the abortion regime in America. ?(d) Ergo, the only hope for serious progress on the abortion issue is in electing Republicans.

But it?s not only the abortion issue. ?On many issues, Romney gives conservative evangelicals the best chance for progress. ?When you consider the fact that he is also a man of extraordinary personal integrity, even more remarkable intelligence and competency, and an extremely successful business leader with precisely the kind of economic experience this country needs, there?s no question why conservative evangelicals would support Romney. ?Because they?re not stupid.

How a virus might make you diabetic later in life

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the viruses that most infected people carry without ill effects. Once infected you are infected for life and, although it normally is dormant, it can become active again at any point in time. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Immunity and Ageing shows that CMV infection is a significant risk factor for the type 2 diabetes in the elderly.

Obesity, inactivity and aging are known to be associated with insulin resistance, one of the first signs of incipient diabetes. However only a third of those with insulin resistance go on the develop type 2 diabetes. So what marks these people as different? Why do their pancreas' fail? Genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a part but so also does inflammation. People with type 2 diabetes usually have raised levels of biological markers for inflammation such as elevated CRP and larger numbers of active white blood cells.

Chronic infections including CMV can 'stress' the immune system and when researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre and University of Tubingen Medical School compared glucose regulation with antibodies to CMV (or CMV seropositivity) in over 500 participants of the Leiden 85-plus Study they found that having CMV was associated with type 2 diabetes.

The researchers suggest that CMV could be either acting directly on pancreatic cells or indirectly by causing the immune system attacking the pancreas. Dr Andrea Maier, who led the investigation explained, " In our study we realised that although CMV seropositivity was associated with type 2 diabetes, higher levels of HnA1c and high non-fasting glucose the actual level of antibodies against CMV was not. "

This study is looking at the effect of CMV on the very old. By their very nature these people have had longer to become infected with CMV and have low risks for other factors which are linked to diabetes or to cardiovascular disease. While it may not be possible to extrapolate these findings to the general population it seems likely that finding a way to overcome CMV infections may reduce diseases, such as diabetes, later in life.

4 Tips to Improve Your Business Marketing | Direct Selling ...

Marketing for your small business requires a good deal of creativity, especially if you want to avoid wasting precious dollars on things that don?t work for you. No matter what type of marketing you choose for your business, there are some key concepts to keep in mind. For example, focus on what your customers want and how you can help them, and work on marketing yourself instead of your product or service. With these things in mind, the following suggestions can help you improve your overall marketing strategy.

  • Leverage your strengths. Many small business owners make the mistake of apologizing for what they don?t provide or services they don?t offer. Instead of doing this, emphasize what you can do for your customers by demonstrating the strengths of your business. For example, a mobile pet groomer does not service cats at all. Instead of drawing attention to this, she focuses only on marketing her business to owners of dogs only. Any literature she distributes refers to her business as a dog groomer, not a pet groomer. She emphasizes this so effectively that most people don?t even think to ask her if she services cats at all. In the rare instances that they do, however, she still responds by reminding clients that she grooms dogs of all breeds and sizes. Her ability to highlight her strengths and use them to attract the right customers makes her marketing efforts much more effective.
  • Look at your competitors? weaknesses. Gather some marketing materials (flyers, newspaper ads, emails, social networking sites, etc.) from your competitors. Look at them from a customer?s point of view and decide what their weaknesses are. You might get a beautifully designed email in your inbox complete with hyperlinks to their website, scannable coupons that save you the hassle of having to print them out to use them, and a brief but memorable description of the services provided. The only problem is that some similar version of this flyer gets delivered to your inbox at least once a week. After the first couple of weeks, you know what you?re going to find, so you start deleting it as soon as you get it. The flyer itself is not the weakness here, but the frequency and lack of variation of the email. Learn from these types of mistakes and avoid them in your marketing plan.
  • Incorporate trends that make sense for your business. This requires some industry research, but can prove quite beneficial for your marketing efforts in the long run. Find out what others in your field are doing, and if possible, incorporate it into your business. Back to our mobile dog groomer, she has researched other local groomers and has found that they offer incentives for customers who are located within a 5-mile radius of her home base, have more than one dog to be groomed, and who use her services multiple times in a 6-month period. All of these perks make sense to incorporate since they are starting to become a standard in the industry, and they will help her stay competitive. It would be a good idea to point out these incentives in her marketing efforts as well.
  • Brainstorm with your community and customers. Feedback from your customers is a valuable tool that you should be using on a consistent basis. In addition to asking about how satisfied they are with your services, pick their brains about what kind of marketing gets their attention. It can sometimes be difficult to see something from a customer?s point of view when you?ve been so focused on your role as business owner. Strike up conversations within your community to gain a new perspective; your customers will appreciate your interest in their opinions.

Emphasizing your strengths, downplaying your weaknesses, and industry research can improve your marketing and help prevent you from wasting money and time on methods that don?t work.

Last of a five-part series

The droughts that have parched big regions of the country are killing forests.

In the arid Southwest, the body count is especially high. Besides trying to keep wildfires from burning up these desiccated forests, there's not much anyone can do. In fact, scientists are only now figuring out how drought affects trees.

Park Williams studies trees at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, but not the way most scientists do. "We're interested in trees that die," he says ? spefiically, death by heat and drought.

Sure, lack of water kills trees, but which ones die first, how long does it take, how long can they go without water? "That's a part we don't understand very well as ecologists," says Craig Allen, an ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "We don't know what it takes to kill trees."

Allen and Williams have tracked droughts through the centuries. They know there've been bigger droughts than the one we're in now, but not many. And Williams says this one is different. "In past droughts, temperatures always rebounded and precipitation rebounded and went to a wet time," he explains. "What we have now is a gradual trend toward warmer temperatures."

Climate change is making the region ever hotter. And when you have consistently hotter weather, the atmosphere gets thirsty ? it sucks water out of the ground and out of plants. You get more droughts, and deeper droughts. There's less water for everything.

Computer models of climate change predict that this region will warm by several degrees before the century is out, and Allen says the "new normal" will look like the worst of the past. "So it suggests basically that the main tree populations on our mountains will die," Allen says. "They will not be able to survive there. It doesn't mean there won't be any trees anywhere on these landscapes, but it means the current dominant trees will die."

'We Don't Really Understand It'

Which ones survive, and how many, is the subject of research at the Los Alamos lab.

Nate McDowell runs what you might call a "tree torture" lab. It's actually outside in the desert, near the national lab. He's growing a group of pinon and juniper trees, about 15 feet high. Plastic gutters keep rain away from the tree roots, to simulate drought. The trees themselves are growing inside clear plastic chambers ? tubes with no tops. Silvery hoses carry heated air into the chambers.

We climb in through a hole in the chamber where you can immediately feel the heat. It's about 7 degrees hotter than the outside, roughly the increase predicted by computer models of climate change over the next 80 years or so.

David Gilkey/NPR

A tree stands surrounded by a chamber that keeps the temperature about 7 degrees warmer than the outside air. Scientists say the cycle of heat and drought in the region has intensified because of a warming climate.

McDowell is simulating drought and a warmer climate. He measures how the trees respond ? there are instruments stuck into and all over the trees. Even wrapped around the stem.

"Every few minutes they measure the diameter of that tree," he explains. The trees look like patients in intensive care ? wired up with tubes coming out of the stems. All to see what it takes to kill it. "Everyone knows it gets hot and dry; you know, beetles show up, the trees are dead," McDowell says, "but we don't really understand it."

One thing he's watching are the tiny holes in the trees' needles, called stomata. The trees absorb carbon dioxide through them, to make food. In drought, though, the stomata close up to conserve moisture. That means they can't make food. "Now that's no problem if it's just for a day or week," McDowell points out, "but you know the question is how long can they tolerate that before they run out of their stores? It's like if we didn't eat."

We'd start burning up our own stores of fat, and that's what drought-stressed trees appear to do ? they start consuming themselves, though it's not fat but carbon.

And when trees die, whatever carbon they've got left goes into the atmosphere. Carbon is the very thing that's already warming the planet. "If there's more surface area of the Earth dying, more forests are dying, there could be more carbon coming out into the atmosphere," McDowell predicts. "It accelerates the warming of the Earth."

When the climate warms, trees in dry places like this may not survive. But the world's climate scientists have yet to include predictions of how vegetation is likely to respond. That's what the work here is aimed at ? to help predict where the losses will be, and where there might be refuges, so we'll know more about what climate change will bring.

Mass burials in Damascus town amid massacre report

AMMAN (AP) ? Dozens of bloodied bodies were buried Sunday in mass graves in a Damascus suburb where activists claim more than 300 people have been killed over the past week in a major government offensive to take back control of rebel-held areas in and around the capital.

The British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 32 more dead bodies were found in the streets of Daraya on Sunday and that they had been killed by "gunfire and summary executions." Among them were three women and two children, the group said. It put the toll for the past week as at least 320.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, claimed 300 bodies were discovered Saturday in Daraya and 633 people have been killed there since the government launched its assault last week.

President Bashar Assad, in comments carried by state media, reiterated his long-standing claim that a foreign plot was behind the uprising against his rule and said he would not allow it to succeed "whatever the price might be."

Britain's minister for Middle East affairs, Alistair Burt, meanwhile, said if confirmed, the massacre "would be an atrocity on a new scale requiring unequivocal condemnation from the entire international community." He added that it "highlights the urgent need for international action to bring an end to the violence, end this culture of impunity and hold to account those responsible for these terrible acts."

Burt said he had discussed the killings with U.N. and Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

It was impossible to independently verify the death tolls because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict. However, activists and residents have reported excessive use of force by the regime in major battles, with indiscriminate shelling from the ground and the air.

The Local Coordination Committees said some of those killed by regime forces in Daraya were buried in mass graves on Sunday. Video footage posted by the group showed bloodied bodies wrapped in colorful blankets lying next to each other with branches of date palms strewn over them.

Another video posted on the Internet and dated Saturday showed dozens of bodies on the floor of a mosque in Daraya. Most of the bodies were bloodied and wrapped in blankets. The anonymous commentator said there were at least 150 bodies there and blamed a pro-government militia known as shabiha for the killings. The authenticity of the two videos could not be independently confirmed.

The Local Coordination Committees said an additional 1,755 people had been detained in Daraya, suggesting that hundreds more might turn up dead.

On Thursday, troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships stormed Daraya after intense shelling and fighting that lasted days.

The battle for Daraya showed the regime to be struggling to control Damascus and its suburbs though the firepower available to it is far superior to anything the rebels might have. Government forces are stretched thin, with a major ongoing battle for control of the nation's largest city, Aleppo in the north, as well as smaller scale operations in the east and south.

On Sunday, regime forces also used helicopter gunships and tanks to pound rebel-held areas in the northern city of Aleppo and the restive southern town of Daraa along the Jordanian border. The Observatory said it had reports of fatalities, but did not have exact numbers yet.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have died in 17 months of fighting in Syria, as an uprising that started with peaceful protests against Assad's rule has morphed into a civil war.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, several thousand Syrians gathered at Bab al-Salameh border crossing, having fled airstrikes in their northern towns and villages. They squatted on the sidewalks of three large hangars once used for cargo inspections of trucks. Some said they had been there a week or more.

Mohammed Abdel-Hay, 41, said his family of seven fled the village of Marea after a regime warplane bombed it last week, destroying a house and killing two people.

"They shelled us and we didn't leave. They hit us with helicopters and we didn't leave. Then they brought warplanes than drop huge bombs that destroy entire houses and we left," he said.

Since then, the family has staked out a patch of sidewalk where they sit on a plastic mat with a few grain sacks full of clothes.

Mustafa Khatib, 40, a middle school principal from the same village, said he, his wife and their five children fled about the same time and have been staying in the hangar ever since.

The hangar has only one set of latrines, which the women and children use, so the men must use nearby fields. Water was short, and Khatib said he hadn't showered in a week. He said all he had eaten all day was a piece of bread and a hardboiled egg brought by a local Syrian aid group.

Like most of the families, Khatib said he hoped to get into a refugee camp in Turkey, but had been told there was no room.

"We'll stay here and wait and see," he said. "Every day, we ask and they tell us today or tomorrow, but they've been saying that for a week and we're still here."

In Damascus, Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa appeared in public for the first time in several weeks for a meeting with a senior Iranian official, ending rumors that he had defected. Reporters saw him get out of his car and walk to his office for a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of Iran's powerful parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy.

There have been a series of high-level defections from the Assad regime in the past few months.

Al-Sharaa was last seen at the funeral of four top security officials killed in a blast in Damascus on July 18. Since then, there had been rumors that he defected to Jordan, though al-Sharaa's office and Jordan repeatedly denied he defected.

He was seen Sunday at the door of his office, shaking hands with Boroujerdi, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene. Al-Sharaa looked serious and steered away from reporters covering the meeting. He did not make a statement.

Pan-Arab satellite channel Al Arabiya reported that air force intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Hassan had been assassinated, but a senior government official denied it. The official insisted on anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the media. The Al Arabiya report said Hassan, a powerful member of Assad's inner circle and religious Alawite minority, was shot dead Saturday by one of his aides who defected to the opposition.

Addounia TV, a pro-Syrian government channel, also denied the report. It said Hassan is "fine and the news about his killing is absolutely untrue."

In neighboring Jordan, officials say the country is bracing for a mass exodus of Syrians in the wake of intensified fighting.

Jordan appealed for increased international assistance to 160,000 Syrian refugees it is hosting. Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah said the refugee influx has swelled even further, with more than 2,300 Syrians crossing into Jordan on Friday ? the largest arrival in a single day since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in March 2011.

"The number of refugees is growing and our limited resources are thinning," Maaytah said. "The international community should come to the aid of the Syrian refugees."

The United Nations refugee agency said it has yet to secure half of the $190 million aid appeal launched earlier this year to support Jordan and other countries hosting some 200,000 registered Syrian refugees.

Jordanian police spokesman Col. Mohammed Khatib said a Syrian rocket fell in the northern border town of Ramtha late Saturday, but no injuries were reported. It was the seventh rocket to fall in Jordan in five days, underlining the intensity of the army assault on southern Syrian towns such as Daraa, the birthplace of the uprising against Assad.

A police statement said 200 Syrian refugees pelted stones on Jordanian security guarding their desert camp late Saturday, wounding several policemen. The refugees were protesting poor conditions at the camp.

Home Improvement | Affordable Bathroom Remodeling Ideas :: By ...

So your tired old bathroom is in need of a boost, but on a budget. Thankfully, there?s no shortage of stylish and thrifty bathroom renovation ideas for the budget-conscious home improver. At Los Angeles Bathroom Remodeling, we?re committing to helping everyone, no matter their budget, create the bathroom that they deserve. Here are a few common bathroom remodeling ideas we can help you with:

Bathroom Remodeling Idea #1: Add stylish storage. It seems simple, but adding storage to your bathroom can both increase its functionality and its aesthetic appeal. Whether you choose to install wall-mounted shelves or a new array of cabinets in your bathroom closet or under your sink, extra storage can easily turn a bland bathroom into a function, funky addition to your home. And if you already have cabinets in your bathroom but don?t like the look, consider refinishing and repainting them and adding new countertops. There?s no reason you can?t make what you have work for you!

Bathroom Remodeling Idea #2: New faucets. Many sink fixtures are boring and utilitarian ? to say the least. That?s why replacing them with hip, modern and sleek stainless steel faucets is one of the most popular bathroom renovation ideas out there. It?s a simple change that can breathe new life into your bathroom. (If you?re looking to make your bathroom more eco-friendly, go with a low-flow faucet model. They look great, and they do their part for the environment. What?s not to love?)

Bathroom Remodeling Idea #3: Rejuvenate your countertops. Your bathroom countertop takes a beating over the course of its life. Why not replace it and give your bathroom a new lease on life? Whether you go all-out and get granite countertops or opt for a simple, understated ceramic version, a new countertop can put your bathroom over the top. (If you?re tired of the whole sink/countertop combo, consider a pedestal sink. These beautiful, elegant sinks stand alone in your bathroom and lend a striking, modern look.)

Bathroom Remodeling Idea #4: Wall tiles. Let?s face it: wallpaper is boring. (That?s why ?blending into the wallpaper? is such an insult.) So why do you have it in your bathroom? Replacing wallpaper in your bathroom with wall tiles is one of the easiest ways to completely revitalize your bathroom space. Whether you choose green glass tiles (a popular pick at the moment) or go for a rustic, stone look, wall tiles can lend your bathroom an air of permanence and sophistication.

Bathroom Remodeling Idea #5: Amp up your light fixtures. Light fixtures are one of the least-noticed but most important aspects of a bathroom. If your bathroom has either dim or harsh lighting, it can be an unpleasant place to be. Spruce up your bathroom with refined, modern wall-mounted light fixtures, or install extra light sources on a bathroom vanity. These subtle lights accent your d?cor while playing off of any natural light you may get in your bathroom.

These are just a few of the most popular and effective bathroom renovation ideas. Come consult with the trained professionals at Los Angeles Bathroom Remodeling to find the right remodeling plan for your home.
