On June 29, 2012, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced the appointment of two members of CIFAR?s research community to the Order of Canada.

Natalie Zemon Davis (University of Toronto), a member of CIFAR?s Research Council, was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada. She is recognized for her ?distinguished contributions to the field of history, notably her pioneering approach to previously unexamined aspects of social history.?

Paul F. Hoffmam (University of Victoria), an Associate in CIFAR?s Earth System Evolution program, was appointed as an Officer of the Order, for ?advancing the field of geology, notably through his landmark research on the Precambrian period of Earth?s history.?

"We congratulate Dr. Zemon Davis and Dr. Hoffman for receiving this prestigious honour. Their appointments to the Order of Canada are acknowledgments of how vitally important their research is to advancing Canadian society," said CIFAR President and CEO, Alan Bernstein.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is the centrepiece of the Canadian honours system. It recognizes individuals who have enriched the lives of others and made a difference to Canada.
